With the S6 having glass facing on the back and front of the device, I'm concerned about screen cracking from drops. For convenience I was planning to go with my carrier's (AT&T) protection plan, but I'm really turned off by the high deductible. I noticed that Samsung has a plan similar to Applecare:

Samsung Protection Plus Mobile Elite

It's $99 for 2-year protection, and each claim is $75. Definitely cheaper than AT&T's (Asurion) plan which is $7/mo and $199 claim deductible. It doesn't cover theft or loss, but I'm not too concerned about that.

Has anyone purchased this plan for a previous Samsung device (e.g., S5)? I'm curious to hear how well the plan worked. Thanks.

Sounds like a good plan to me and it is transferable if you sell the phone to someone else.

FYI, if you go to the Samsung website now it will show the S6 is covered under this plan.

If I buy this phone outright from amazon.com would I be able to get this samsung insurance? I don't know if they are an "authorized" samsung dealer which I think you have to be (or need to buy from a carrier directly) in order to use this. Anybody know?

Samsung's web site says this for their plan:

"If your new Samsung mobile device was not purchased from a Samsung authorized retailer or wireless carrier, it is not eligible for Samsung Protection Plus Mobile Elite."
So the question is: Is Amazon.com considered a Samsung authorized retailer? You might need to email Samsung and ask that question. I do know that when you signup for their plan, you have to also upload a receipt for your phone purchase (I guess to verify the date of purchase).

Amazon is an authorized retailer. They have a list but it's buried somewhere on the website, but this is the link to it: Store | Samsung

If you are buying a carrier variant, such as buying the AT&T version and full price by selecting the without a service plan option, then you should be 100% ok. If you are buying an unlocked S6 you may want to be careful as Amazon loves to put products on their site that aren't sold by them, it'll say 'Sold By: JimBob Inc.' or whomever the sellers name is near where it says In Stock. Samsung may get picky about that since technically Amazon isn't selling the phone, some third party seller is and just using Amazon's website as the middle man.

Thanks for the info. I would be buying the AT&T version full price. Have some amazon gift cards which makes it a better option for me and having no sales tax is a bonus. Seems like the samsung elite insurance is pretty good so was hoping to buy that.

You should be fine then. Both AT&T and Amazon are authorized retailers, you'll just have to upload a copy of the invoice from Amazon when you purchase the Samsung insurance.

The Samsung Elite Warranty appeals to me, $99 for one time upfront cost and low co-pay and coverage for 2 years seems very good to me. The "only" downside is loss or theft, now I have never had a phones stolen and only one phone lost in 20 years, but I wasn't going into the water after it. So really I have a perfect track record, still theft is a big thing these days. I have another day to consider it.

I get free 600.00 insurance per phone for my main line and up to 3 additional lines by simply using my credit card to pay my bill each month. Insurance covers theft but not lost phone and any damage to it. Deductible is 25.00 per claim and I can have up to 2 claims per year up to the 600.00 limit per phone. No added charges or fees to have this service. Check with your credit cards rewards plan to see if this would work for you.

Man, what kind of credit card do you have?

If it gets damaged or lost you can just say someone stoll it and your good to go.
Beats the he'll out of my 9 dollars a month and 199 deductible for sure.

Does anyone know if you get a "new" phone, or do you get a refurbished?

It also states that you can cancel early & get a prorated refund. So if you have no claims, & upgrade in 1 year, you should get back about $50 in refund. If that's true, that's a pretty sweet deal.

I believe the terms and conditions state you will be sent either a new or refurbished unit (which is what other insurance companies like Square Trade or Asurion do). The pro-rated refund is good too if you sell your phone before the 2 years is up.

Wells Fargo basic credit card. Card cannot be tied to a line of credit though. Also cannot be a debit card either. They sent me a small brochure in the mail and I thought, too good to be true, so I checked it out at my branch and its good to go. One banker said she thought you had to also sign up for automatic payments, another said you don't, I did to be safe, plus I know my bill is paid every month. Once you set this up, the next month after it shows up on your bill is when your insurance is in force. This beats AT&T's 30.00 a month and 100.00 or more deductible. I set mine up on line with my carrier, and with just a few clicks, your in business.
