Samsung S5 - why does my screen light up every few seconds?

Ever since I got my Samsung S5 I have found that the screen lights up every few seconds. It doesn't matter what it is doing, whether charging or not, face up or face down, on the lock screen or not. There is no notification and no sound. It darkens again almost immediately. But it is killing the battery life. I have turned off daydream, all the wakelocks I can find and the stay awake when I am looking at it feature. I've run out of ideas. Any suggestions?

Welcome to Android Central! Is Smart Stay on? That's not how it's supposed to work anyway, but if Smart Stay is on, maybe it's malfunctioning and causing the screen to do that. Try turning Smart Stay off.

sounds like you have tried almost everything except doing a Factory Reset.

I would do that now and start from scratch.

something has bollixed up the O.S. to be causing that to happen and it is not likely you will find a fix using the menu system.
