Samsung S6 Native Email App Burning up Data

[Android Central Question]

The native email app on my Samsung S6 started marking very old email, that were previously read, as unread. At about the same time, the email app began chewing through 4 or 5 times more data than it ever had before. This caused Verizon to charge me a $15 data overage fee this month. Making things slightly more confusing, much of the high mobile data usage was logged at times when I was at home and my phone was connected to wifi.

Help.
