My last upgrade (S7) I used Smart Switch. When I was finishing configuring I setup and enabled Google Restore which it reinstalled and created duplicate Apps that had been moved using Smart Switch.
I DO NOT want to go this nightmare again.....recommendation welcome regarding best migration method from S7 to S9.

Thanks in advance.

I struggle with this also... because I dislike old unnecessary apps being installed. I'll probably do a full fresh setup. Tedious...

I think if you turn the Automatic Restore off in your settings you can avoid this. Anyone know for sure?

I want to use Smart Switch but I certainly don't want duplicate messages, apps, etc.

I have never got google restore to work on a Samsung device.

I always use Google's service. Other manufacturers seem to miss things or screw things up. Yet I never had an issue with Google's.

If you have a carrier you can pop into the retail outlet and let them make the transfer. 5 minutes.

I always do a fresh install on both iOS and Android. for some reasons issues crop up when I restore data to a new phone (bugs, lag, freezes).

I just gave up. good luck op.

Personally I only smartswitch everything that isn't an app that it backed up (pics, messages, settings, wifi passwords, themes, etc.). The apps however are from Google reinstalling them. Smart Switch doesn't do app data backups anymore.

Response from Samsung,
We understand that you want to know the best method to transfer data from S7 to S9 as you have experienced issues before with the S7 set up. We will provide you with available options to solve the issue. We will provide you with available information.

In general while transferring data through Smart switch will not create any duplicate apps. Smart switch will only transfer the apps data list and when you tap on them you can install the app.

As you do not wan to have any issues while S9 set up you can use smart switch to transfer data and make sure that the smart switch is up to date before using it.

You can check for the available updates for the Smart switch by going to the smart switch app from the phone and tap on the three dots present at the right corner of the screen and select settings>>About smart switch.

If there are any updates available it will be displayed there and you can update the app.

I used SmartSwitch once and wasn't happy with the results. I always either just set it up as new myself, or use Google's restore method.

Agreed, this is the only way to go. Besides most of us are glued to these phones and know our login info etc etc like the back of our hand. I can set up a phone the way I like and log into all my apps in under 2 hours

Does Google restore Copy phone calls and sms to new phone? Smart Switch does
