Samsung sucks for removing the micro SD and MST Samsung Pay.

What stand out feature does Samsung have without MST and micro SD? They don't have one. For that reason I believe Samsung will lose market share. An example of a phone that I would take over an S21 Ultra is the Rog 5. It has a 6k battery and a micro SD slot. Every phone maker has a generic top tier phone like the S21. Its what features does that phone have that others don't? S21 doesn't have a feature that I can think. I will say I am tied to the Note/stylus. But if the S21 is a sign of what's to come I am going to be keeping my Note 20 Ultra for a long time. If Samsung ever does discontinue the Note and I have to upgrade I'm going with the phone with the most features and that phone today would be the Rog 5. The Rog has to be gaining market share if they came out with 4 different models. Watch out Samsung!!!

Will carriers ever offer the Rog 5 in their lineup?

Enough said. I don't see myself ever buying another Samsung again. I've upgraded every year to a Samsung (excluding 2015 S6/Note 5 year). I'll be keeping my Note 20 Ultra for a very long time it seems like. Good thing I got the 512GB. At the time I thought it was stupid to pay extra when I upgrade every year anyways. Looking back it's looking like a brilliant choice.

R.I.P Samsung.

I haven't had to use MST anywhere in a long time. The one local supermarket that didn't do NFC payment at the self checkout. Just upgraded to NFC. So now I don't need MST anywhere I shop. So I'll give Samsung a pass on removing MST.

I need to set up Samsung pay and try it at the couple places I shop at the most and see if it works. I just haven't set it up yet but I know my S10 plus quit working at the Walmart on my house I don't know why I know it used to. I'll have to try to remember to set it up tomorrow.

I was using my S9+ at Walmart with Samsung pay and MST right up until I got my S21. They will not allow NFC, so I know the S21 will not work. I refuse to download Walmart pay for several reasons. The top two are: 1- if we let individual retailers hold payment methods hostage so they can force us to have an app for each and every store we go into, then eventually, we will have to have an app for each and every individual store we want to shop at. In that case, I would rather go and shop with cash and make them make change. 2- The only reason they want to do this is to get EVEN more of your personal information than they already have. No thanks.

I can see why the small Mom and Pop retailers may not be able to afford it. However, Wally world probably feels like they are the only game in town and if you want to shop their stores contactless, then you will have to use what they dictate. That was not true until they took away MST.

While I did go ahead and get the 21 for other features that I liked over the S9+, I am no longer married to Samsung. (I REALLY was mainly sticking with their phones primarily for the benefits of the MST) So, I suppose I should thank them for releasing me from their grip. I was really enjoying the fact that I leave the house without the need to take my cards with me everywhere I went. Now that I have to have my card regardless, I rarely if ever use my Samsung pay. Probably 50% of the retailers in our small area do not take NFC payments. Hope Samsung wasn't getting a fraction of the payments as they are likely going to lose more. (Then again, I kinda hope they were)

For a number of years my relationship with the Samsung phones has been because of SPay. Now, with the S21 series lacking MST I've switched to Google Pay. I've not even set up SPay on my AW2 watch. I really feel like my biggest draw to Samsung phones is no longer tethering me.

I still think Samsung puts out a nice phone, but I've also experienced their absolutely horrible customer service. In the future I'll be checking out alternatives such as the new Oneplus 9 Pro.

Maybe Samsung will come up with another killer app but for now they are just a really nice phone and maybe not the only one anymore.

You know, until I saw this thread pop up a couple months back, I never knew anything about MST. Other than wondering what Samsung has to do with Mystery Science Theater (3000)?

I saw the Samsung Pay app, but always ignored it.

The SD card, though is a big deal to me.

Mystery Science Theater 3000, MST3K, love that show. Thanks for making me laugh!!

:D

SD Card is a big deal to me also. I spend a lot of my summer where I don't have a mobile signal, so having the card really helps for my music, etc.

Walmart does not use nfc because it is cheaper for them to do their own thing. They do not have to pay the extra fees to the powers to be for using NFC.

I hate using walmart pay but then I also got tired of mst declining the first time and have to redo it every single time at walmart. It made no difference it it was self checkout or regular register. You are right about all the different stores with their own payment method. In my area there is also Kroger and Dollar General.

As I said in a previous post, mst is very handy to have and at this time it is a dealbreaker. But the other day when I went to a bunch of flea markets, I noticed most now have nfc. So maybe mst may not be necessary much longer in my area if it is no longer needed at flea markets. Maybe I can live without it after all

I am already researching wear os watches incase my next phone is not a samsung note. Tough trying to find a good watch as small as active 2 with nfc and google pay.

Well, it was obviously not a deal BREAKER for me either. However, it has been one of the things that has kept me on Samsung since they have had it. I am not in need of an SD card as I have almost instant backups to my home NAS over my VPN for anything I save to my phone. Additionally, I noticed that the more I used the SD cards, they higher my battery drain.

But, the MST was a convenience that apparently only a few used. And, it was one thing that Samsung had that no one else does. So now, they REALLY have to deliver on other aspects. (Which they kinda did with the S21)

I don't think sales were ever driven by people thinking "Hey, this phone has a feature that I have no use for, but no other brands have it, so I'm buying it!".

If Samsung took away MST, there was a reason for it. I agree with Samsung on how NFC is so prevalent now, MST is no longer a must have feature.

No. I am sure that if I did not have a use for it, then it would not influence my decision. However, I DO have a use for it and now I just no longer have the capability I had. Soooooo, they have to deliver more than other phones on all other aspects. The S21 Ultra did. But, I did not look at other phones as I had not realized about the lack of MST until I had already ordered the phone. Next upgrade, I will likely have many more options that do not have Samsung in their name. And yes, the MST was that useful for me. Not having to carry credit cards on a 50 mile bike ride was a little more than convenient. But, since I don't have that option anymore, I may as well look around at other brands next time. So, no longer having a USEFUL option does GREATLY influence my purchasing decisions.

MST is a US feature. I don't believe it has ever been available in the UK. We have coped perfectly well with NFC pay here for years and we have continued to buy Samsung phones, despite the inferior Exynos chip which is a far more controversial discrepancy than MST. Imho

The problem in the U.S. is that we are way behind on payment technologies. I actually still have an active card in my wallet without a chip.

We could get by with NFC too if all retailers in the U.S. had it, but many are just living in the past with their outdated magnetic card readers.

Several huge retailers here do not have NFC - Walmart and Home Depot to name a few...

I'm not quite as angry as all of that but I agree that, at least those two things, feel like a loss. I'm not sure how much I miss the SD only because I usually encrypt it and I don't miss the notification that constantly reminded me that it was encrypted. That was annoying. Because it was encrypted I also never put it in a card reader or anything like that so, do I really miss it??? Not that much. I do miss MST. I got much faster reads when I had it. Even at terminals that say NFC the read was so much faster on older models. Was that design, software or the fact that both were working together and it was just a boost? IDK. I will say that reads on my S21 U are noticeably slower. Like painfully noticeable. I also don't like the NFC animation that I only seemed to get a dozen or so times on previous models before just getting an image of the card being used. Granted this doesn't affect anything other than what I'm looking at when I use SP but it's annoying to me because it feels like they talking to me like I'm a grade schooler. "OK, now hold the device up to the NFC symbol on the terminal and wait for it to acknowledge the read..." I'm using the thing, I'm pretty sure I got this.

As for being to the point I would never consider another Sammy, eh. I mean you're not going to get back the things you've lost by going to another manufacturer. No one else has MST. That's what separated Samsung in the electronic pay department in the first place. As for SD... I remember back in the froyo Gingerbread days, or sometime around then, when Google killed the SD. They never really returned full function although they did relent somewhat, eventually. Even so, at least for me, it's not a huge loss just because there was always some little issue, can't save directly to it, have to spend $K to get one fast enough to do this or that, some small chance that it would corrupt and you'd loose everything anyway, it always had to be encrypted separately... on and on.

I said MST was the last straw but I hated the S20+, I mostly like the S21 U but totally miss the S10+. Crazy.
