This is a long shot but here goes. Is there any way to get updates from Samsung instead of through the carrier?

only if you bought the unlocked version of the phone. not sure why you would want to, history seems to indicate that the updates from the carrier are often more timely.

Sometimes they're more timely. I have an unlocked S8+ that is on the August 1 update. On T-Mobile, the phone is still on July. My unlocked S7 Edge was also on the August update a few weeks before my T-Mobile S7 Edge got it.

You have to have the unlocked one directly from Samsung versus the carrier variant.

You wouldn't want to apply the unlocked version of an update to a carrier device.
Carriers often bake other fixes into updates that aren't included in the unlocked version.

It can be done and there are instructions telling how to do that on the XDA forums. There are questions and answers there on how it affects further updates.

Not sure how you would apply an unlocked update to an unrooted Note 8. I've been a member of XDA long before Android was a thing and this is the first I'm hearing of such a thing.

The phone doesn't need to be rooted. I read about this about a week ago on XDA. They referred the person asking about it to the S8+ forums to the instructions there. The same method used for the S8+ can work for the Not 8.

Updates are a luck of the draw... even Pixel phones are not guaranteed to get it first all the time.

That said, they will get updated first most of the time.

Okay, not sure what I was think. Root isn't needed to update via Odin.

Still, you will not get automatic updates with this.

Yeah, I don't think the person who was interested in loading the US Unlocked firmware onto their carrier Note8 cared about the updates, they just wanted to get rid of the bloat.

I want updates from Samsung, because security patches and OS updates from carriers can be really slow. I had a Moto G3 that got 1 update then it never had anything ever again.

I would be careful with that. If I remember right the unlocked version of the s8 and s8 plus we're updated after the carrier models. I could be wrong but I remember reading that in those forums.
