I'm sure i'm not alone here. I don't want to break my new toy!!

I just got my EVO over the weekend. Upgraded from a BB 8330 curve. I've quickly feel in love with the EVO ;) I love everything about it...and unlike some, I love HTC Sense.

2 questions
(1) Can I root and still run HTC Sense?
(2) Can I backup my current settings so if i mess something up while rooting I can rollback?

Thanks in advance

root doesnt mean you lose htc sense, it just gives you superuser privileges allowing you to run several apps that require it, edit the file system, and install custom roms.

the only way you lose sense is if you flash a senseless rom like cyanogenmod...

other than that, you are good to go

There are plenty of Sense ROMS out there. And backing up is a cinch with ROM Manager.

I just jumped ship last night and rooted. I immediately flashed CM6 because I'm actually not a fan of Sense.

Rooting wont get rid of sense, infact you can even flash a rooted stock rom, so that nothing changes at all. Except for that you have super user permissions in your evo.

Unfortunately there is no way that i know of currently that allows you to back up all of your data from your phone, to then later restore it after root. You can back up your apps though, through something like astro, and google will handle your contacts, calendar, ect. But other than that, its just like it sounds in the instructions. Its a full wipe.

What he said. As a newbie to this, it took me about an hour to root my Evo and flash a custom ROM. I then spent the rest of the day restoring apps, settings, etc, and whacking things back the way I like them. Fortunately I like playing with this stuff, so it was fun.

Or backup apps with adb

Or backup apps with adb. If you have just rooted 2.2 you should be familiar with the command prompt. If you use adb you can get a little more practice in :)

Update --

Rooted the EVO last night (AC-ROM-Froyo 2.2). It was actually easier than I thought. I watched a few videos and read a number of procedures.

Just wanted to say thanks to everybody who helped out.

Super noob question as I prepare to finally root this weekend:

Will my sd card need to be reformatted or anything or will I lose anything on the card when rooting?
