Scratch? In the Gorilla Glass?

Ok, so I had a DX for nearly a year. Never had a screen protector on it and the screen still looks flawless. I just got a D3 a few weeks ago and it looks like I already have some kind of scuff/scratch in the upper left hand corner. It's really weird, though. It shows up when you touch it, rub your finger across it, or when I'm using it and my ear is touching it. However, you can wipe it away with something smooth, or a piece of clothing. But it always comes back, in the exact same spot.

Is there anything I can do about this? It's really weird.

Side note: when I was buying the phone at Verizon, they told me if I declined screen protectors then they would note that in the file and I wouldn't be able to get a replacement for a scratch. For one, I never knew you could get a replacement for a scratch. And two, is this complete BS? Anyone have any info?

Wow! That salesman was very bold and very full of crap. They won't warranty your phone if you have any kind of scratch, first off. Second, yes the Gorilla Glass is supposed to withstand a majority of scratches.

Yeah, that's kind of what I thought, too. She claimed you could get a warranty replacement because of scratches on your screen, as long as you opted for a screen protector. Not that it matters anyway, because the screen protector that they put on my wife's phone doesn't cover this part of the phone that has a scratch anyway.

That being said, has anyone seen any kind of scratch like this in Gorilla Glass? I'm very careful with it. It's in my pocket and it's on my desk on papers. I don't keep it in a pocket with anything else in it. But the scratch is the weirdest thing being that you can wipe it away...only to see it come back later.

Salesman was full of sh!t. The thing with wiping it away is weird. Gorilla glass can scratch. It is scratch resistant, and can take things like keys, but dirt or sand will still scratch the screen. I put screen protectors on all my phones just in case.

Yeah, I kinda figured it could scratch, but I hate screen protectors and figured that if I was careful I could get by, since I did that for so long with my DX. And I'm not really sure what's up with the scratch. It almost looks like a smudge, but it's always the exact same smudge, so I'm not entirely sure. And then it wipes away. And then it comes back...

I will say if youcdont work in harsh environments like I do, there are some screen protectors out there that you can't eveb see once there on. Boxwave and Steinheil are the two best in my opinion. The dry application ones are nearly impossible to notice. BUT, they can scratch as well.

I'm thinking about finding a really good screen protector that will essentially cover up the smudge/scratch and not let it reappear, but I haven't found any out that fit the D3. I used Steinheil for a little bit with my DX and they were about the only ones I could tolerate.

I have two spots like you described. They wipe off, but reappear. If I rub my finger over it, the fingerprint doesn't seem to appear over the spot. It is almost like it rubbed the glossy coating off the screen.

Yep, that's exactly how I would describe it. It isn't a "scratch" per se, but like some of the finish came off. If it gets skin oil in it then it shows up. If I wipe it off with my tie, shirt, glasses cleaner, etc., it disappears. But the next time oil gets in it it reappears. It's pretty frustrating. I've almost decided I have to get a good screen protector once they actually come out and put it on so the oils can't make these scuffs reappear.

I am pretty sure that is what I will do as well. I don't want too many more spots showing up haha.

Those sound like manufacturer defects to me. You may take them to Verizon and find out.

If you do, please post their response. I am curious as to what they will say or do.

Just updating you. I called the Customer Support line and explained my situation (that it was like a scratch, but not really, etc.) and the girl there said there were no known manufacturer defects like that. However, she did tell me to bring it in to the store I purchased it from and show it to them. She said they may give me a new phone. When I get a chance in the next couple of days I'll go check and report back.

Ok, thanks. It just seems strange that it would "scratch" so soon. I got my phone July 19, and it appeared the 21st. I also think I take good care of my devices. I wonder if any others have had this problem. When I get home, I will upload a picture so others can see.

That would be awesome. If I get a chance to talk to my local Verizon store, I'll report back too.

Just to report back - I called VZW again just to see what would happen if I talked to a different rep. This one said there was nothing I could do and I would just have to live with it (whereas, the first one said to take it to my local store where they might give me a new one). I haven't had a chance to get to the store yet, but I'm hoping to go today. Just thought I'd give everyone an update and that it doesn't seem like anyone REALLY knows what they're talking about.

I have found from Best Buy to Verizon, Armstrongs Nursery to Target, no one has their job on the basis of experience. Most any help comes from some 18 year that wants money to play with.

There are so very very few technical experts availible to the public anymore that it saddens me.

The geek squad is a prime example of a huge smoke and mirrors: Unfortunantely my mother in law took a laptop to the geek squad because of booting errors. She thought they would fix the problem, thye charged her $120 to reformt and reload windows - no back-up, no restore, pure total data loss. My mother in law is a 55year old grandmother that has now lost 4 years worth of photos and data. I told her I had a complete hard drive corruption, took it to the towns local specialist and he saved 90% of my past 10 years data. Point is the Geek squad is just some kids out of high school, been on the forums a couple times and think they are experts.

It doesnt suprise me that any rep you talk to doesnt grasp your situation. I wouldnt doubt that 90% of the Reps dont know what gorrilla glass is, what phones it has been uinstalled or have a faint idea of what you're talking about.

Yep, they have no clue that Gorilla Glass isn't supposed to scratch unless you maybe get some sand or diamonds on it. And neither was the case. I baby this thing, just like I did my DX. My DX in almost a year has NOT A SINGLE scratch on it. This thing in a week has one...if you can call it a scratch. I tell my entire family to not listen to what anyone at Verizon says and just ask me questions because I know more than anyone that works there anyway. It is sad that people end up getting hosed simply because they believe everything that these "so-called experts" tell them. Trust me, I'm not giving up and I'm going to VZW this afternoon.

Update: I wasn't able to get Verizon to give me a replacement for the scratch. No one there really had any clue what I was talking about or that Gorilla Glass is not supposed to scratch. But I did figure out that if you clean it up real nice and put a good quality screen protector on it, the scratch is more or less gone. It is completely unnoticeable.

Hope that helps anyone out.
