Screen blank on Hangouts wifi voice calling

Android stock 4.4.4
Build KTU84P.N900VVRUDNK1
Hangouts version 2.5
Dialer version 0.3

My issue is that when I go to the Hangouts or Hangouts Dialer app, and make a voice call, it completes, but the screen goes "blank". See attachment. It works great, but I can't do anything like enter digits or anything. If I hit the icon in the upper left, it very briefly flashes what I imagine should be the normal call page with options to enter DTMF, but then goes back to main hangouts page. I've tried with proximity sensor enabled and disabled (option to turn off screen when on a call), but still same behavior.

Anyone run into this, is there a fix/workaround for it?

Try reinstalling the app that might fix the problem sometimes

On my phone it is defiantly light oriented shining a flashlight at the front camera turns on the display
