Screen Breakage seems easy to do

This is why I don't have a case.
I hate how it detracts from the size and design of a phone. I have insurance on the phone and the 3D is not in poor supply like the 4g was. If it breaks, deductible it is.

Apparently gg isnt that great, I got an evo4g replacement and within one week it had 2 deep and very noticible scratches not in a straight line either, almost like swirl scratches..

Made of money, are we?

You know, my Evo 4G still remains without a SINGLE scratch. Never had a screen protector either....

If you hit any phone on it's sweet spot it will break. I heard of the exact same things happening to other peoples EVO 4G's here on the forums as well.

I can fortunately say the EXACT opposite. The hardest most brutal hit my OG EVO took was about a 6 foot fall straight from my ear onto concrete. It ended up landing face down with a super-loud slapping sound. I was nearly 100% certain I would turn the phone over to find the screen in a million little pieces. I remember staring at the phone on the ground for like 5 seconds cause I didn't want to see the damage lol.

I picked it up and to my surprise their wasn't a scratch on it.

New reply from HTC about Gorilla Glass...
-----------------------------------------
Dear Mike,

Some of our phones have used Gorilla Glass in the screen (such as the original Evo), however, the Evo 3D will have the proprietary formula. By this I mean that it is an exclusive formula used in our glass.

Well that explains the "legal speak". It isn't the known GG, but yet a special formula, which I wonder if it has something to do with the qHD/3D factors? However like someone else stated...it still doesn't make it destruction proof.

The rep that sold me my protection plan said that the deductible for the EVO 3D is $100.

I was told and read the same while setting up my other TP plan. I just don't feel like going through it right now. I will at a later hour.

dropped my evo as it slopped out of my hand while getting out of my wifes little car. Face down with a slap and caaaaCHOW...shattered. Went back to Best Buy (had insurance on it) and got it fixed. Though it took FOREVER, 5 weeks, to get my phone back. They gave me a samsung loaner, Intercept. That phone was so balls that I almost drove into a semi truck Tommy Boy style on the way home trying to use it.

Anyways, I talked to best buy techs and they said that was the old program and it didn't work well. They said now when your phone breaks, you bring it in and you get a refurb in 2-5 days. Said it works well. Hope I dont have to find out.

almost same here i had launch day evo the screen has 1 tiny scratch but i dropped that phone SO many times WITHOUT a case...now the glass on the camera...thats another story :p

I think you may very well be the first to report something like this. Last year, with the OG Evo, it was some poor dude on a bike. I still have that picture of his broken screen saved on my computer somewhere.

MY Evo 3D took a 2 foot fall onto the floor of my wooden front porch, while the case was on it. NO DAMAGE DONE. My heart did skip a few beats...

The Otterberbox commuter case, like the one posted by the OP, does not protect against drops. From the site...

"The OtterBox Commuter Series for HTC EVO 3D is a slim case that offers a high quality safeguard against harmful bumps and shocks..."

The Defender series is the one that offers increased protection against drops. Regardless of a phone having Gorilla Glass or not, a perfectly angled fall from a high enough point could damage the screen.
