I have always thought I have seen a bit of artifacting on this display, but I am not sure a new phone will fix it. Moto, of course, wants to send a new phone.

Would some of you please download the png at http://soletc.com/stuff/yuk.png and look at it on your Moto X. Do you see a smeared area between the icon on the far right and the one in the same row on the left? Something similar to this...

Thanks.

The Amoled screens that moto uses has inconsistencies. Even I tried a couple phones but no luck. You can always check with a light gray background where you can see any sort of bands on your screen.

In this case, it has nothing to do with the AMOLED display, as that imperfection is part of the screen shot too.. Maybe it's part of the wallpaper.. Have you tried a different wallpaper or a different launcher?

The screen capture does NOT show the artifacts. The photo of my phone does.

If you're seeing artifacts in the screen capture, it is your device's display causing them. If you doubt this, view the screen capture (yuk.png) on your PC.

I didn't think it's s screen artifact.. If it wasn't meant to be in that screenshot, it just wouldn't be there.. I'll look at it on my wife's s5 and report back.

Now I see what you mean.. That darker "bar" that is present in the moto x 2014 is not present on the wife's S5.

Yeah... this appears to be an incredibly bad display. While this is only my second phone with an OLED display, this effect is imperceptible on my 2013 Moto X. Not sure if it is the higher resolution of the 2014 or what, but I can even see this banding in the new Google photos when there is only one fairly dark picture on a row.

Likewise in AutoSketch when I put a dark object on a light background. Really a shame.
