Screen orientation/tilt problems

Bingo! Loaded a different emulator and it did the trick! For future referance (and others who are new to this) I used the Android Terminal Emulator from Jack Palevich. Not as flashy as the one from linxmap, but since it worked and the other didn't, I'll give my props to Jack!

Didn't know there was a different emulator. I assumed you were using that one to begin with. If I had known which emulator you used I would have told ya the one I used to fix mine. Glad you got it working. Finally got mine to calibrate too last night. had issues with the sensors not working in flying games. calibrated it once and it somewhat fixed it, so I calibrated again and it was fixed.

I also could not get the calibration to work with the app by linxmap. The emulator from Jack saved the day! Thanks mj

Screen rotate slow on dk28?

Does anyone else have issues with the screen taking a long time to rotate to and from landscape?

Problems with the tilt sensor

I have recently flashed my Epic to Froyo with Ext4 and really love the responsiveness. It feels much better.

The problem I am having is that the tilt sensor is not working right. When I bring up a bubble level program, I see the sensor detecting incorrectly. It does not switch to the side bubble from the top bubble. After calibrating using /system/bin/sensorcalibutil_yamaha and then also calibrating the bubble level program I can get it to switch to the side level, but sometimes it does it upside-down. I also see the problem in Google Sky Map. I can't raise the view up past the horizon. Instead of scrolling further up, the screen starts moving sideways. So the view is not even looking the direction (ex. North) that I am in addition to not moving up past the horizon. It seems I can't calibrate the full range of the sensor or something. I have also tried to calibrate the compass by rotating the phone three times on each axis.

Does anyone have any ideas on what I need to do to fix this. It makes any tilt games pretty unplayable and even switching from portrait to landscape mode is slow. If I can't get it fixed, I will have to go back to stock Eclaire, which seems painful to me now.

Thanks

I think this is part of the compass calibration bug that many seem to have. I to have this problem with my compass not pointing correctly but my gps is dead on. This compass bug even exists on stock Eclair.

I didn't have things like this happening on Eclair though. Perhaps the compass wasn't always accurate, but Google Sky Maps would work. I use AlarmDroid for various alarms, and it has a feature where you can just flip the phone over face down to snooze the alarm. In the settings that program won't detect a flip any more. It still detects the shake, but not a flip.

Thanks for the reply, I wasn't aware that people were having similar issues. I have been searching around and have only found the one thread where people suggest using the calibration utility that I mentioned. But my problem doesn't correct after trying that.

No problem on the response. Maybe this will be something that is addressed in the official Froyo release concerning the compass bug which is probably related in some way.

Well, I restored Eclair though Odin and I still have the problem. Another app that I used a lot was Satalite AR. It shows you the positions of the satalites in the sky in a similar fashion to Google Sky Map. It will not allow my to look up at the sky any more either. This sucks! I figured restoring to the factory settings would fix my phone.

[edit]
A little more information on the situation. I installed an app called Z-DeviceTest that shows you the values of all the sensors on the phone. The X and Y axis accelerometer values are close to 0 when flat on the table and range from -10 to 10. The Z axis is the messed up one. At one point it was ranging from -19 to -10, now after doing multiple calibrations I have it ranging from 10 to 0. It does not go past the vertical into the negative numbers. That seems to be the problem. Once the phone screen tips past vertical to upside down the numbers just freeze in place.

I can't recall that my compass has ever been correct. Usually off 30-45deg and tonight is appears to be stuck pointing to the 'right! My GPS locks in quickly when I'm outside, it takes a minute or more when indoors. The phone is stock Eclair. The Compass app and GPS Status both have calibration modes. I've tried all the figure 8 techniques that I Google could find. If the magnetometer is "bad" I don't think Froyo will make any difference. Has anyone solved the compass issue without rooting?

I know the fix. Question does the screen lag during rotation too? Every time I flash a dk28 rom I. Look for tw things. First off I check screen rotation for any noticeable lag. Secnd I download winds of steel demo from market to test sensor in a flying game which is a really good way to check ur sensor. If my plane is flying crazy when I hold the phone still I know I need to calibrate my sensor.

First download the android terminal by jack something. Then open it and follow this...
Type su then hit enter and accept superuser permissions
Then type /system/bin/sensorcalibutil_yamaha then hit enter.
It will then say lay phone on flat surface or something like that and hit enter.
It will then say calibration finished.
Exit app. Turn screen off then back on and u should be good to go.

What I do is immediately after doing that I test it again with winds of steel demo. And it always fixes the problem.

Okay just reread and noticed u did that. Ill try google sky map and see what I see. Try to winds of steel demo and let me know if that works. Also thi is the only way I calibrate my sensors. I don't use the method in settings cause it always messes it up it seems. Als don't calibrate it using any app either

Screen doesn't rotate on 2.1 after dk28 fix

So this happened when I flashed back to 2.1. I was rooted so I did the screen fix with connect bot again. However I just flashed back again from rooted 2.1 to stock 2.1 getting ready for tomorrow.

My screen is not rotating when turning the phone sideways with stock 2.1. What's up with that and how do I fix without root.

You can root your phone on Eclair 2.1 and do the screen rotation lag fix and still receieve the OTA update. Why? simply rooting your phone will not stop the OTA and installing the 3rd party app won't either. Everything else I would leave untouched until you receive the OTA update or update manually whichever you choose.

I went back to install all the sprint and samsung apps I deleted.

Why is this happening after flashing with odin? Shouldn't all settings go back to original?

It should. Its been a while since I've been on Eclair and I can't remember if it ever had a screen rotation lag. I would think once your updated to Froyo it should be gone.

Little history, Odin is a program from Samsung that was leaked. They used it to reset phones, and do other things like we do. So basically we are doing and using the same methods as they would do.

Its not even lag. It just completely doesn't rotate at all. I fixed it when I flashed back from 2.2 to 2.1. It was working fine after that.

Then I went from 2.1 rooted and flashed back to 2.1 without root stock. And it doesn't work now. Really confusing me.

Orientation problem.. nothing seems to work

I checked all the other threads and tried all of the suggestions but I still have the problem. Is this just froyo?

I manually updated and Im having major orientation problems. Ive done the terminal emulator /system/bin/sensorcalibutil_yamaha thing several times as well as calibrating under system settings. After the emulator (done on flat surface) ive rebooted by turning the phone off in addition to the 3 finger method.. no love. Any suggestions?
