Screen orientation/tilt problems

Keep doing it. Check the suface you are putting your phone on with a level. Mine did not take at first, so I did it a few more times, rebooted and the lag is much better, down from almost 3 seconds to just a bit under a second. I am on eb13 and rooted.

Will do :) Did you reboot by just turning it off or the vol down, power, camera method?

Z-Axis of the Accelerometer

I was having similar problems with the tilt after rooting my Froyo Epic. I wonder if some of the people here have the same problem.

There is a free app called Z-Device that shows you the raw data coming out of the various sensors on the phone. The z-avis of the accelerometer gets messed up when rooting and even Odin does not fix it. I see the data go to a -10 to -19 range, when it is supposed to be in a range of -10 to 10. Running sensercalibutil_yamaha will bring it into a -10 to 0 range, but it never goes past zero when you tilt the phone up. This causes the phone to stop tracking the sky with apps like Google Sky Map. Two seperate phones have done the same exact thing when trying to restore my backup data. Not sure if something is frying out, or if there is a calibration value being lost during rooting.

When the z-axis is way out, in the -10 to -19 range, it causes the lag in the screen tilt. When it is sort of fixed, the lag goes away, but tracking won't go above the horizon.

I have tried the sensorcalibutil_yamaha to recalibrate the tilt sensor. It readjusts the z-axis from a range at -19 to -10 into a range on -10 to 0. But the sensor is supposed to go from -10 to 10. When the sensor is way out, the -19, I have seen games go crazy with the steering and things. When the sensor is at the -10 to 0 range, most tilt programs work fine. Most only use the x and y axis. It is the z axis that is getting messed up. And that one does not recalibrate to it's full range. There is a nice utility called Z-Device that shows the raw data coming from the sensors in the phone.

I was running the stock d118, and updated manually to the eb13 from Sammy's website. So far, the only bug I have is that the screen rotation seems to lag. I never noticed before, I tried the stock calibration with little success. anybody with a suggestion?

Root your phone.

Download "Terminal Emulator" from the market. Fire it up. At the prompt:
1. Type su (then allow superuser access when it pops up)
2. Press enter
3. Type system/bin/sensorcalibutil_yamaha
4. Press enter
5. Follow instructions on screen
6. Restart phone (a simple power off-on)

Your 3 second lag will become instant.

I read about this and then tried it. If you go to the calibration screen and lay the phone with the screen face down and then hit calibrate (hang phone off the edge of table or whatever) it speeds up the rotation fairly well.

Phone screen will not rotate?

I'm on EB13 and midnight rom 4.1. I never had any of the bugs when I upgraded, by yesterday my phone quit rotating, it's not lagging, it just won't rotate. I have auto rotation selected in settings, any ideas on what my have caused this? I didn't change anything on my phone that I can think of?

Before going through the root and reset via Termianal, I did the above. It worked without the root and Terminal reset w/ Yamaha. I tried the root method (wanted to root since update to Froyo anyhow).
I do not see any noticable difference now from calibrating through root than I did with the phone upside down (I tried it on it's back a couple of times, that just made it progressively worse). So, it seems whether rooted or not, the easiest is to reset calibration via the GUI and place phone face down to do it...FWIW.

Auto rotation slow all of the sudden?

i was curious and pressed horizontal calibration and calibrated the Epic 4G. now auto rotation is VERY slow. I mean 3-4 seconds after i turn the phone. Did i do something wrong? I tried to do horizontal calibration again, and its still slow....

This might sound crazy, do you have Froyo EB13 installed? If so, hold your Epic upside down, above your head so you can see the screen while looking up at it. Now re-calibrate it again. This worked for me. I have zero rotation lag....

i did this and this worked. thanks dude!

Rotate non-functioning?

I'm on EC05 that I got to from the upgrade no data loss .tar through ODIN from this site.

Somewhere along the line I seem to have lost rotation completely... except for when I click out the keyboard. I have gone into display and tried the autorotate function, but the phone behaves identically regardless of what the setting is set to.

Any ideas? I sure don't want to have to re-odin and lose my data.

Everything else works flawlessly (so far).

See post #52 above. Same quick fix for EC05 as EB13....

Since going to EC05

I have lost auto rotation since going to ec05. If i open the keyboard i get it, but the initial wallpaper screen will not rotate. The only launcher that I have been able to get it to rotate is launcher pro. Is there a fix? Has anybody had this problem? Right now I'm one click rooted w/rfs files. As soon as I went to ec05 I lost the auto rotation.

I will try this as well. My tilt lag has always been a bit slow but since downloading ROMs it's gotten worse, up to 4 sec. What's interesting is when I go past 90 deg, say 120 deg and back to 90 it grabs immediately. So I will give this a try as well and report back.. Thanks!!!!!!!

Yeah thats the sensor calibration problem. Happens every time I change ROMs, k0nane's link will fix it.
