Screen Overlay Detected error on Marshmallow.

Im having the same problem all of the sudden on my galaxy note 5 and it keeps opening up like 15 apps over and over what do i do . there isnt any app switched on

it keeps opening up like 15 apps over and over
What keeps opening all of the apps? The overlay notification?
You'll have to be more specific about what's happening if you want help.
You could try including a screenshot of the problem.
And see if you can reproduce the problem in Safe mode.

Posting in the forum for your specific device would be a good idea as well, since the behavior and/or solution may be different for your device/OS version/manufacturer skin.

the best way to solve the screen overlay problem was so easy.

  • Install "Alert Window Checker" app in google play.
    Open the apps.
If you can see some of the apps in USER APPS category, remove them one by one until you sort it out what apps cause the problem
then your problem will be solve.
fix 200%. thanks me later. :)

Turn Off and stop Clean Master or any similar app that prevent high battery usage, any app that helps your battery last longer, any app that helps your phone working economically. I FORCE STOP Cmaster and then I could grant any permissions to any of my apps

Thankyou, deleting clean master made all of my permissions available again.

it's not really about FB chat heads. I take it as a bug, basically you can't add a permission to any app as long as there's an app with screen overlay enabled at work (which could be, amongst others, also FB chat heads), for a lot of people it's Twillight - an app that changes the color of the screen depending on the time. No disturbance for any app, just adjusting the color and you have to turn it on and off just to give any app a permission. That's not a fix, that's called a workaround, and a dirty one at that

My phoenix 2 6.0 marshmallow from at&t has this overlay problem and I haven't been able to find a work around or fix for it in any of the ones I've tried to use. That gear icon or application manager is not there that I can find. So how can I fix it , I can't figure out how to even move apps and things yo my SD card. Phone fills up memory too fast

I have found an error several times already which reads:

"Screen Overlay detected" to change this permission setting, you first have to turn off the screen overlay from Settings > Apps

try to download "Alert Window Checker" and " Install Button Unlocker ". I did this about a minute ago and Yes Problem Solve 😄😆 Samsung Galaxy A7 User.

Has anyone thought about just rebooting the phone? That's what I did in my Galaxy Note 5 and it solved the issue. I have no Twilight or Lux app in my Android OS so that's not an option.

I have galaxy note 5 and having this screen overlay issue and I did factory reset my phone "twice" actually and it's still showing up.. and advice on what to check for to make it stop? Sense factory reset I have not downloaded any new apps just the basic ones the come on the phone..

Re: Screen Overlay Dettected error on Marshmallow.

Close any chat heads such as facebook messenger think it hapends when something else is on the screan i closed the chats and it worked

YES finally after a month solid of not being able to use any apps or install any new ones it works. Turning a certain unknown app off screen overlay and closing any chat heads from all apps. It lets me not only install, but then open and then reopen chat head.. thanks.

When you download apps that optimize battery, clean trash, boost performance, etc., they often restrict apps from functions they need to preform. That's when you see the screen overlay error. It means there's another app preventing the action.

goto setting ---> apps there is an option on top of "All apps" click on it it will give you 3 options 1. all apps 2. Enabled 3. Disabled you can reset the setting of Screen overlay there

everything we are doing here is a work-around, temporary fix. When will Samsung/Google release a real fix, sooo damn annoying this on Marshmallow. I wonder if Nougat solves this altogether... ?

I'm really annoyed with marshmallow. I had an old Note 2 for years. It worked like a dream on Kitkat. Now I have marshmallow on my new phone (J5 prime) and it's a nightmare. This screen overlay thing is an absolute nightmare. It doesn't help to go in and make everything "not on top" because then things don't work. Even the simple messaging app for receiving sms's doesn't work unless it's put on top. I couldn't even read an sms!! Twilight and Lastpass don't work. What's the point then? I have to keep going into this part of the setting to fix things - turning them on top and then taking them off again. Even my emails from gmail won't send from my phone. Shall I chuck my new phone in the bin? I wish I could go back to Kitkat. Android, do something because marshmallow sucks!

I downloaded those two apps and it still doesn't work.

The following workaround works every time:

When the error displays, on my phone, I go to "Settings" | "Application manager" | <burger menu> | "Apps that can appear on top". Change drop-down from "Enabled" to "Apps with permission". Turn OFF the setting for ALL apps (you may want to write down which you had on). Tap <back>. Locate the app whose permission you want to change. Tap it and, under Permissions for that app, make the required changes. Tap <back> twice to return to the main "Application manager" screen. Now go to <burger menu> | "Apps that can appear on top" and change the switches back to "ON" for ALL the apps (or the apps you noted previously). Note that not all apps allow the switch to be toggled. This is normal.

Depending on the apps you have installed, you may have to switch a LOT of switches, like I have to. It's a horrible process and a big oversight by whomever is responsible for such a poor implementation.

Simple to fix

I've solved mine. First I deleted CM and that solved part of the problem but not all of it.

I then went through my most recently installed apps that use screen overlay and remembered that my floating toolbox app was recently updated. I turned it off and that solved the problem completely. I then updated the permissions I needed to update and then switched my floating toolbar app back on.

That's it, it's as easy as that. It's been bugging me for days. I'm on Samsung Galaxy S6 and the problems began with the most recent update a few days ago.

It apeared for me on Samsung A7 2017 and there was really no solution but I found a new solution.
That's so easy.
Just reset factory... install all apps you need but ***make sure you do not open any app after installation of it***
Then go to setting>applications> app name and when you are in setting of each application go down and select permissions. Then turn on all permissions of all applications installed one by one.
I suggest you start with WhatsApp if you have it in applications you use.
When all application's permissions are turned on then start opening apps for the fist time and use them.
About the new applicatins you want to install it's the same, install it and before opening give it all permissions in setting then open it.
It seems the only bug in this version of android is that you must give permissions to applications manually before it comes to ask you while running application.

Good luck.

Hey everyone, this error really troubled me for a while. I search for help online, but they didn't seem to work for me.
Well, I went deep. I realised that something (app(s)) is probably writing over the screen - overlay (my case were system apps), so don't feel like your case is different.
I own a Techno mobile W2, running Android v6.0. I tried restarting my phone and granting permissions immediately it boots, but I realised these apps probably ran automatically when my device boots. This is what I did then;
1. Settings->Auto-start management
2. I then disabled all the apps (removed them from the auto-start list). I couldn't get the exact app which overlayed the screen - because they were too many.
3. Reboot my device
4. Went to Settings->Apps and selected the app (which demands permissions).
5. Granted the app permission(s).
(6). You may want want to re-enable some of the apps (if not all) on auto-start. In my case, my keyboard didn't pop-up (because I disabled the app on device start-up. So I need to enable it and restart my device).

Well, your device may not be designed as mine (it may not have the Auto-start manager directly in settings), but see how to get to the apps which start automatically on system boot (and follow the instructions above (2)).

Thanks to all the replies above, they really helped me. Hope this is helpful too (I signed up for this reason).

I turned off every single screen overlay or whatever it's called an it still didn't work so I uninstalled DU Battery Saver and DU Caller and now everything is working fine. Just try uninstalling 1 app at a time til things work 4 u then when u find the culprit u can re-install the apps u previously uninstalled. Its a pain in the *** but hopefully it'll help. I was rdy 2 buy a new phone lol
