Screen Overlay Detected error on Marshmallow.

I had the same problem with the screen overlay detected error which didn't allow me to give permissions to a whole bunch of apps. rendering them useless. I tried everyone of the suggestions recommended on this site, to no avail. Finally, after speaking to Sprint about yhe problem on my Galaxy S7 Edge, a smart tech at a Best Buy store at the Samsung dept. asked if I had downloaded any security apps. which I had. Clean Master and Battery Doctor. Once she got rid of them because the interfered with the built in Knox security, everything started working fine.

Thank you so much for this suggestion. Bought a Samsung Note 7 yesterday and the screen overlay issue was stopping me from adding apps to the phone. I uninstalled a battery saving app and it now allows me to add apps. I tried so many fixes before I saw your post

OKAY GUYS I have the lg g5 and after calling verizon and lg and literally finding out nothing once so ever about the screen overlay I played around with my phone for hours and figured it out on my own. Whenever you first download an app and it asks you for permissions (for example when you upload a photo to instagram or Facebook it will ask you for permission to access your media) if you deny the permissions for some reason I don't know why but it creates a screen overlay glitch and its hard as he'll to get rid off. It got so bad for me that I couldn't get on any app without the screen overlay detected popping up so basically what I did was I did a factory reset to my phone and started new. The best advice I can give you is do not go into the settings and mess with the screen overlay it will only make things worse trust me I figured that out the hard way, just factory reset your phone and remmebr not to ever deny the permissions. So if your having this problem you need to factory reset your phone and make sure you never deny any permissions you would be better off to just hit the back button. K really hope this was helpful guys if you have any questions for me just reply to this as I stated earlier verizon and lg have no idea how to fix this problem because the marshmallow update is so new.

Definitely turn off Clean Master. I could not Force Stop it so uninstalled it and I was able to complete the app profile I was creating. I reinstalled Clean Master afterwards.

Hi,
Ive been having this problem no matter what i did! Ive turned every overlay off, permissions still ensue and puts me in a huge overlap. Ive done everything I could think of. Alcatel idol 3 phone, and has worked great until google marshmallow. I cant even do app permissions without it redirecting me. So pissed and need help

When looking at the list of apps in the screen overlay permissions, find the settings and show "system apps" and/or "enabled" apps. Make sure all apps are turned off, or switch them one by one (i know, there's a lot) to figure out which is the trouble app.

Thanks, based on what I read on those threads I was able to get the app to start and run by disabling the Screen Overlay setting for ALL apps, but now how do I get back into that configuration to re-enable it back for the apps that had it enabled previously? I don't seem to find it.

PS: Never mind, I found it, Settings> Click on the Gear icon on the top> Draw over other apps.

I need help with mine... so i go to settings and what?

Depends on what phone you have. On the Nexus 6P running Android 7, go to Settings -> Apps -> Gear icon (in the upper right corner) -> Special access -> Draw over other apps

Facebook Messenger is the number one cause of this issue for me. Temporarily turn off Messenger in the "Draw Over Other Apps" (overlay) control panel.

Applications--> Application Manager-->More-->Draw over other apps

Applications--> Application Manager-->More-->Draw over other apps
Not sure which phone/OS version you're referring to, but I don't see anything like that on my Nexus 6P (7.0). That's the forum you're posting in.

Hi, I have found an error several times already which reads: "Screen Overlay detected" to change this permission setting, you first have to turn off the screen overlay from Settings > Apps I then click on "Open Settings" and it takes me to the "Draw over other apps" area under Settings, I then scroll down to the app for which the error is being generated for and once I open it there's a setting to "Permit Drawing over other apps" but it's grayed out, it won't let me either enable it or disable it.An app I just installed called "KeepSafe" won't even open unless I change that setting, Any ideas what I might be doing wrong or is this a bug on Marshmallow? Thanks a lot in advance for any help
I have encountered the same problem with my Dad smartphone then I found that cleaner like Clean Master was causing this after uninstalling it I was able again to activate all permissions just try it maybe it's the same problem my dad's smart phone is HTC 1 m9+

Nothing else so far has worked, but if I disable both Facebook and Messenger on the settings the error takes you too, it works fine.

I don't have twilight or any of the other culprit apps which keep being blamed. Facebook and messenger seem to be the ones my phone has issues with.

Samsumg Galaxy S6, bought ages ago, probablem started after an update.

Hi, I had similar problem... I had several apps that would not open due to an issue with "Draw over other apps" setting being locked and unable to change the setting. So I reset my phone thinking it would solve the issue but it created another issue. Under the "Draw over other apps" setting I only had a few of the apps (most were missing) so I could not even change the setting. To resolve the issue the apps that I had access to and could modify setting, I changed the setting to OFF (even system apps). Then I went back to the apps that I wanted to enable the settings and it finally allowed me to make the change. In short, try changing all apps setting to OFF. This should resolve the issue.
This worked for my mom's Motorola G2!!Life saver! Thanks!
