Screen Overlay Detected - To Change This Permission......6P is messed up

Is there any way I can tell my phone to stop caring about screen overlays altogether ? If it always has to be off for *anything* to function, why have the option in the first place? It clearly serves point and the permission should just be removed entirely. I *constantly* have to switch back in forth because the apps that need it actually need to do it (Lux, Tasker, Pocket, etc) but doing so renders every other app useless until I switch it back off. There's no reason for it. It's just terrible programming, like I'm being punished for using popular and useful apps. It's a frustrating and constant annoyance.

Exactly this was a stupid software revision that offers nothing but inconsistencies and aggravation

I have similar issue on my j7. Problem is with Clean master app. Uninstall it and restart the device. It should work fine now.

Hello Jodene, welcome to the forums. Do you have File Manager or any other app by Cheetah Mobile (CM) installed in your phone? Many users with a similar problem managed to fix it after uninstalling any CM app.

Thank you so much i've been having this problem since the update and i deinstalled the cm app and it helped. Thank you so much

I removed CM apps like clean master etc and got rid of the problem

Yes this works on Samsung J7 too.

I have a Samsung Galaxy 7. I've had it for about 2 months. Suddenly about a week ago, I had this same error about the overlay. After hours of tinkering with all the suggestions here, the answer was to uninstall the Clean Master app. I had used it for years with each phone I've had and no probs before. It is tricky to uninstall, I needed to do it this way: Go to play store, all apps, and uninstall anything by Cheetah Mobile. In my case that included Clean Master. I guess they had an update that has a bug in it, it was a good reliable app, but I would say uninstall anything from Cheetah Mobile. And if you go to settings>apps as recommended in your error message, it does not necessarily show up as an app to turn off/reset, and if it does and you do so, it still doesn't resolve the issue - hence the need to go the playstore route. Hope this helps someone! I have seen this in other threads, but not the part about having to do this via the playstore.

Has anyone got this error message? I'm trying to share a photo via facebook and whether from my gallery app or from facebook. It asks if I want to give FB access to my storage. I say yes. It says "Screen overlay detected- To change this permission setting you first have to turn off the screen overlay from Settings > Apps"

I do that but nothing works. Whether it says NO by FB's Screen Overlay allowed, or YES - it still just directs me in this endless loops. Have tried reboots and nothing. Anybody else experiencing anything similar?

mine is doing the same thing how do I fix it

Re: Screen overlay

Thanks, Madklan3 @ #89. This solved my problem on a Note 4 though I had to go back and reset all the permissions that had been disabled. A much simpler solution than some of the others!

Your post was very helpful to me. I uninstalled all CM apps and now my Samsung s7 edge is fine. Thanks.

Yes I've had this same issue with screen overlays, even if I turn it off the error message still comes up, how do I fix this on my Sony Experia Z3 phone?

New to this forum, but wanted to sign up to reply to those needing help on the system overlay issues, I had this for a while, I had 2 phones replaced from Verizon and finally called samsung after not getting help from Verizon, every phone had the same issue, I was told to go to best buy to the Samsung agent there, she was able to look at my phone and had it fixed in minutes, I had the clean master on my phone it's a app to prevent viruses and clean your phone, she deleted it and that is what was causing the issue, she then asked me if I had a Samsung account which I did, and she downloaded the samsung+ app, that is better and protects your phone, you can also contact samsung with it even video chat with them. If this doesn't help you go to best buy and have a Samsung agent look at your phone! Its free! Hope this helps! I know I was ready to go buy an iPhone and so happy that I don't have too now! I now love my Samsung phone once again!

Welcome to the forums and thanks for your input.

Did both phones come with Clean Master pre-installed? If so, that's on Samsung or Verizon for putting crapware on the device when they load it up.

If you put it on - well, you should have received better support from Verizon.

In my case it was even more simple:
I have Facebook Messenger, and it's using screen overlay to display the chat heads.
Whenever I tried to enable the setting for allowing Whatsapp to access the filesystem, I was getting the error with "Screen overlay detected".
After reading some of the solutions listed here, I realized that I had at that exact moment the FB chat-heads displayed (I was chatting with some friends).
So I closed the chat-heads and tried again the setting for Whatsapp file-access. And it worked :)
Without having to uninstall anything or restart my phone.
(I have Android 6, on an OnePlus One)

Hi! Thank you very much. I had the same problem with my WhatsApp . I uninstalled all the security apps from CM and here I am now! I can now see all my contacts! But I lost all my chats.. Never mind! The important thing is that I can use WhatsApp again.
Thank you
