Screen too dark at the top of the phone when in an app, how to brighten that?

When I swipe down on my phone to see settings, like wifi, bluetooth, sound, airplane mode, etc, it is so dark, I can't even seen the symbols, only words in white to click off or on and even then, I can't see that, I just have to guess it's in the top right hand corner. When I have an app open or even a text message, it's so dark at the top of the screen, specifically, that I can't even seen the battery usage, my signal, anything. Has anyone seen this or how do you change it? But on just a regular home screen, I then can see everything fine, only when I go into an app or swipe down or really do anything that would take me off the home screen or any other of my screens. I can take a screen shot and post it if that would help. Thanks for any help, it would be GREATLY appreciated.
