Every time I try to take a screenshot by pressing the power + volume button simultaneously, all that happens is I raise or lower the volume! Not to mention I have to hold the phone in a very unnatural position to even try to press the two buttons together. Is anyone else having such a hard time?!

You will find it just takes practise just like the camera gesture.
Practise makes perfect kinda thing ,grasshopper ha :)

Practice. And it only works when holding power and volume down not up.

Never missed one yet. It's just about timing it right like any other device.

I'm not sure if I'm right since I don't have a moto x, but on my old galaxy nexus I had to actually press and hold the buttons instead of just pressing them once.

Per the above comments, it is just an issue of timing and it is exactly like the Galaxy Nexus. I don't find it "unnatural" but you definitely need to retrain yourself to hold it appropriately to make it easier.

It does take some timing. It is a bit awkward as you must use two hands. Once you get the timing on the power and lower volume key it should work fine.

If you cannot get it to work there are apps for that. I used to have one that would take a screen shot when I shook the phone... back in the early days of Android.

Mine won't take a screen shot this way. I have to push the power button a volume down at the same time and hold for a little. I can't hold either one first and then hit the other, won't work. Also I find it easier to do this in a kind of an angled portrait mode.

Yup have to hit power button and volume down at the same time thats where practice comes into play.As others said its just like Galaxy Nexus was.
Also I know what ya mean of holding in an angled portrait mode

I find it easiest to hold the phone in your left hand and use your index finger to hit the power button while hitting the volume down button with your middle finger. Yeah it's a bit of a hassle if you normally hold the phone with your right hand but it's an easy enough transition for a screen shot.

It is not a matter of practice. I used to be able to take screenshots no problem and suddenly it stopped working today. There are several things wrong with this phone. You guys sent it out half-baked. Not even half more like 10% baked

Put it in the oven, at least 45 minutes at 350 and then crank it up to 475 to crisp the edges before you try to serve that to your friends.

Perhaps because of the smaller buttons or perhaps because of their placement together on the same side - I have a much harder time taking screenshots on my Moto X than I do on my Blackberry Priv. I can get the power / volume down combo right 9 times out of 10 on my Priv, and maybe 1 time out of 20 on my Moto X. Screen captures are triggered identically on both phones. Might actually be something to do with the buttons instead of the OP just being an *****, which I realize is the default judgement.

When I have to take a screenshot, it usually takes me 30 attempts and 8 bug reports before I get it right. Also I shouldn't have to practice in order to take one screenshot.
