I was wondering if anyone has tried using a half sized SD card adapter like the ones made for Macbooks and Raspberry PIs? I have been hesitant to pick one up less it be completely useless.

Unless it's an adapter for a standard size card, I wouldn't try it.

I'm probably missing something here, but why do you need an SD adapter? Can't you use the SD card slot that it comes with? Or do you want more than one SD inserted at a time?

I would guess that the OP wants to use a memory card that will not stick out when it is inserted into the slot.

In theory, a half-sized adapter with a micro SD card might do the trick.

We simply don't know anyone who has actually bought one and tried it.

Ah, I see. But if it's half-size, it'd still have to stick out a little bit in order to remove, since it's not a spring-loaded slot, right? If it were flush, then you'd need tweezers to take it out.

This is why the OP wants to know if anyone has actually used a half-sized adapter. No one wants to have a memory card stuck in their Chromebook.

Here is an example:

If adapters aren't the solution, I have heard of USB drives that have a narrow form factor. They don't use memory cards, and they'll take up a USB port, but they only stick out slightly, like this one:

SanDisk Cruzer Fit CZ33 16GB USB 2.0 Low-Profile Flash Drive (Amazon link)

Of course, YMMV.

I have a 64 GB Cruzer Fit with 3.0 USB that I use for my car--very low profile. That's a good idea.

Of course, if you really want to go crazy, I guess you could just mount a hard drive to your Chromebook. ;)

This video shows a MacBook, but I think the same principle would apply with a Chromebook. I haven't actually tried it out, but it looks like a good idea. Basically, you attach a hard drive (SSD) using USB 3.0, and then attach the drive itself to the back of your screen with something sticky.

I just got one. The reason for me, is I have various microSD cards that I use for phones, tablets etc. The chromebook uses a full size sd card.

When you insert a full size card in the slot, it sticks out quite a bit, inviting, snagging, or breaking, or whatever. The short profile one just sticks out about 1/8" and looks better.

This is the one I got and works fine
