SD Card problems?

I always transfer installed apps to my SD card. Starting yesterday, I tried to update a few apps from the market that were already installed & transfered to my SD card. The apps d/loaded fine but the install failed numerous times. This happened to all the updates. To remedy this, I moved them back to the phone & the install worked. I was than able to xfer them back to card. I tried updates of apps from the Amazon store & they all failed. Should I reformat card? I noticed an option to unmount card. What does this do? Should I just shut down phone, pop out card, back up info & reformat in computer then restore? Is there another safer way or is my phone messed up? It is in stock condition, a few months old. The card is a 8GB aftermarket brand.
