I bought my first app yesterday and got a popup window to enter my credit card number, etc. I didn't see anything that convinced me that it was a secure transaction (like https on a PC). Did I miss it or is there no way of checking that it is secure?

Purchases from the market use your Google Checkout account. You can go to Checkout using a web browser, and set up your credit card there. Then you can buy stuff from the Market and it should never ask for a credit card number.
