Ok, so here are my initial impressions:
First of all, they are about the same size so if you like the size of the 7.1 you’ll like the 3a also. It is a bit lighter than the 7.1. The screen is OLED so it seems a bit brighter also. One thing is the on/off and volume buttons are reversed so I need to get used to that. Fingerprint sensor is in the same place. It has a 3.5mm headphone jack. There is no SD card slot but I don’t use much memory anyways. They are very similar hardware wise.
The UI is very similar to Android One. A few subtle differences, like in the camera app, but for the most part they look and act the same. The 3a seems faster and smoother. Not by a huge margin, but you can tell. It immediately updated to the latest update including the February security patch. I think most of us on here have the knowledge to keep us safe but it’s nice to know you have the latest update as soon as it’s available.
The biggest difference, no doubt, is the camera. The A.I. Google adds along with things like night mode make the camera on the 3a much better. Night mode is quite amazing and I’ll have fun trying it out.
I can’t speak on battery life yet, of course. I’ll let you know in a week or so. While the 7.1 isn’t bad I hope this is a bit better.
Which do I prefer? I’d say the Pixel 3a is slightly better, especially if you take lots of pictures. I also like the 3 years of guaranteed and fast updates. Other than that they are very similar, almost equal. I’m glad I got it but, if I hadn’t, I know I’d be happy with my 7.1 for another year or so.
