Setting automatic pause and extension number in contacts

With my Blackberry, in a contact phone entry you could enter an X followed by an extension or access code number. You could then select the number, the phone would dial the number -, then the X would trigger a short pause, followed by then dialing the extension or code.

In Marshmallow, it ignores the X and includes the extension as part of the main number.

Can anyone tell me how the phone and extension number should be formatted in Android to make this work?
