Setting wallpapers from gallery on Fascinate?

Does anybody else notice that when you attempt to use a photo from your photo gallery as your wallpaper, it first makes you resize the picture and then doesn't even display it correctly. Is there any way to change the settings to allow the picture to display as it is taken or even fit to screen?

the necessary wallpaper size is 960*800 (this is the aspect ratio for the resize box) for the fascinate, one screen is 480*800. If you have lp set not to scroll wallpapers, you're only seeing half of what you put in the resize box.

So there is no way to set a picture to show its entirety without any of the picture getting cut off?

I have not found a valid way to set a picture as the background and get the zoom/sizing correct. Even resizing the photo to match the screens resolution, so you aren't cropping anything when selecting it, still sets the picture zoomed too far in. I've gotten past this though because I'm loving my live wallpapers a lot more.

This is the same experience I have had with wallpapers in TW. Even if i provide a photo with the exact dimensions and file type of those that the built in wallpapers have, when selecting it as a wallpaper it forces me to over-zoom the picture and it looks pixellated and trashy. NOsquid, if you have found a workaround for this, please share!!!

Edit: i just opened the TW apk file, extracted the wallpaper jpeg, copied it back to the phone on the SD card and it still refused to use the full resolution version and instead forced me to crop it... Can I rebuild the APK file using 7-zip and just move it back to the phone since I'm rooted?

You crop your files to 960*800 on your computer, then on the phone you expand the orange crop box in the gallery with your finger to get the whole thing, and it still looks bad compared to on the computer?

Maybe I need to look more carefully, I've only used high quality/resolution wallpapers, not my personal photos. I mean if you're using something from the Fascinate cam I wouldn't expect much obviously.

If it is zooming too much a workaround would be to expand the canvas Photoshop (or whatever you use). So the photo would have edges but presumably they wouldn't show up on your homescreen since it zooms. Will take a little trial and error to see how much to expand the canvas.

I can't get the crop box to budge (in size) on the phone. Whats the gesture or whatever to get it to change size? Do i have to pinch-out or grab both sides or long press or something?

Edit: hah, serves me right. I just tried it again and i managed to hit it just right to get it into "size" mode. You just have to tap the screen ever so gently on the edge of the box. I am a bit inarticulate with my thumbs, in the past every time I tried this it just relocated the box and wouldnt change the size.

All I have to do is touch any of the orange lines and arrows pop up to expand

Maybe i don't hold my finger still enough or something, but almost every time i try to touch the line it just relocates the position of the square. It takes a real gentle tap on the line and it switches to size mode where it can then be easily scaled. Anyway, thanks for the info!

touch on the edge slightly outside the box, if you touch in the box, it will move.

works best with your index finger :p

It is weird that the fascinate doesn't even display the cropped picture as it is cropped, but instead cuts off around the edges even more. Also, the image quality drops significantly, even if the image starts off as a high res picture...

I have noticed the quality drop any time I use a pic not exactly sized at 960x800. The topmost pixels will basically never be used; since the status bar will always be there. Also, anything below about 95% "quality" when compressed by a program such as paint.net or photoshop will look ugly. The screen really is good at showing detail in photos; anything less than the best looks terrible.

It is unusual in my opinion that a photo taken on your phone can't be used to make a nice, clear wallpaper... Instead, you get a pixelated, blurry ugly wallpaper.

Disabling wallpaper scrolling in LP doesn't make a difference (but it should). I think the reason for the zoom is for when you scroll through your homescreens that you don't eventually scroll to black, for example. However, if you disable wallpaper scrolling in LP, it should simply format the pic to fit within 1 homescreen imo.

The same should apply if you only have 1 homescreen, like I do, but it still zooms/distorts the image.

When I got my fascinate I went out and looked up the display size and started downloading 480x800 wallpapers and was disappointed to find out it scrolled them onto all screens and they had to be 960x800 too. So I downloaded an app/live wallpaper called "MultiPicture Live Wallpaper" if you go into settings>default settings>type of screen and choose "single picture" it opens up the gallery and you can select a 480x800 wallpaper that you copied to your sdcard that sets it to all screens. You can also do alot more with the app but if you want to just set one wallpaper w/o the scroll it can do that. Hope that helps.
