SGSIII ROMs Galore! The Flasher's Lounge.

Just do a backup of your current setup in recovery. If after wiping and installing Beans you decide to go back, just restore your backup in recovery and you'll be back exactly where you were when you ran the backup.

I did a back up in Rom manager. That will accomplish the same thing I assume?

I don't use ROM manager to create backups. I've seen issues when using that method. Boot into cwm and create a backup there. Or use rom manager to boot into cwm.

In concept it's the same thing, but in practice backing up in ROM Manager can lead to issues. Better to boot into recovery and run a backup manually. For example, if you use ROM Manager to backup and there's an error message, it's easy to miss it as RM automatically reboots your phone. With a manual backup, your phone doesn't reboot until you select that option.

Ok I did that thanks. It goes to CWM? I would find it in Rom Manager or can I find it in recovery? (sorry new to this)

Also maybe related/unrelated have you ever seen or know what this is:

E: unknown volume for path [/sd-ext]

I have only seen that since I took out my sd card and plugged it into my laptop and copied some zips over to it.

If you get that message when you're clearing cache, it's nothing to worry about. It's just checking a separate location to clear, which is not used by default.

Both, but it's preferable to boot into your custom recovery directly. Sounds like you have CWM on your phone which is where you need to be for backups and flashing ROMs.

Don't worry about the error message. If you removed your SD card from your phone it's just a message that CWM doesn't see the external SD card.

Edit: Depending on how your SD card is formatted, CWM may not be able to use it so that may be the reason for the error message.

Sorry for the late entry into this one but here is my take on the whole ROM Manager thing. While I think that its great that the devs made a great utility to help root users download ROMs and such it isn't worth the headache. Like if you do in fact make a backup with it, would you really know how to access it if you soft brick your device?

My point here is that ROM Manager is just something that is an illusion of safety. Yes, you can use it to download and flash ROMs, do backups/restores and many other functions but if you ever get stuck in a boot loop or something like that, you are stuck. Unless you know how to work around the manual recovery then you will be in a panic.

Whenever you are going to rooting/hacking your phone you should always get to know your custom recovery... I may be saving your but one day.

You mean ROM Manager and not CWM recovery, right? :p

Thanks for posting this as this was my next question, I do not want to rely on ROM Manager is there a guide on how to restore if the phone gets stuck in a boot loop etc? I really don't like having to rely on Rom Manager I would like to know the hard way (better way) so to say if that ever happens.

IMO Rom Manager is awful. It gives people tools to mess with core parts of their operating system without giving them the knowledge to know what they're actually doing.

Many of the guides here give you directions for using ODIN or CWM to flash stuff.

The threads that have been stickied in this rooting section are a good place to start.
