Using flash at that distance would have been useless.

Unless triggering flash makes the phone also speed up the shutter speed? I haven't tried it on the Note 8 yet, but on some older phones I had, using flash even when it would do you no good for the composition would produce different effect since it would have changed shutter speed and possibly other settings as well.
 
I checked the details of the photos both are taken having the Orientation: 90° (Portrait mode).

right and there are orientation tags in camera that also come into play. there are many factors... app, phone, in-app tags, how and where uploaded etc.

Quite often get a random rotation on this site.
Only way I have found to not get them is to run all my pictures through snapseed etc first and not make any actual changes. Also helps exceeding the size limits.

nice tip. I usually run them through something somewhere, whether desktop or app (snapseed), and have only gotten rotations on images I haven't done that to, though I did have an issue for a while on my N4 with rotation and Camera FV-5 that had nothing to do with posting. that's since been fixed and haven't had issues since.
