Should I get a Nexus or get something else?

I've had my nexus for about a week now and I love it. I haven't had problems with it. Yes the speaker volume is a little low but the volume+ app handles that with ease. If you are looking for a fun, powerful, root friendly device I would say go for it it is my favorite phone yet. The battery life is as good as an 1850mah 4g phone can be.

all the hype about fast updates from google is bull . this phone has been updated once, and as far as I can tell, the update didn't address major deficiencies the phone has.

this phone was hyped like crazy and while the newness factor did fulfil my desire for change, i'm finding that it's simply just another android phone. I probably would feel this way with most phones though. I came from a droid 3 which i thought was a pretty solid phone with decent features and a nice host of accessories.

as of late, I've been really in need to text message or email images for various reasons and the fact that this phone still will not do it is driving me crazy. i also really which that there was a good car dock withe charging solution available, which as of last time I checked there wasn't (a few months ago). low speaker volume is annoying, and when you put the speaker on max volume the sound quality takes a huge dive.

i get no 4g signal in my home which essentially makes this phone a 3g device that I rely on wifi.

the battery has been fine for me as long as I keep the screen brightness on auto.

bottom line for me, is that the newness factor has now worn off and the lack of updates, combined with the fact that one particular app I use a lot is still buggy, has left me somewhat disapointed with my experience. I understand that bad apps really aren't related to a devices quality, but I have nothing else to judge but my experience.

i jumped on this device when it became available because I'm locked into the unlimited 4g data which I think verizon will do away with sooner or later and I wanted to get grandfathered in. I also expected them to continue to expand their 4g network but I'm still waiting.

i forgot to mention that you are quite limited with ring tones as well.

I have the Bionic & am thinking about buying a GN on Craigslist. Why can you not sent pics via text or email?

It did, actually. 4.0.1 was buggier than all get out.

Another one bitten by the hype Beast!

as of late, I've been really in need to text message or email images for various reasons and the fact that this phone still will not do it is driving me crazy.

Erm. Huh? I can text and email images just fine. What do you mean with this one?

i also really which that there was a good car dock withe charging solution available, which as of last time I checked there wasn't (a few months ago). low speaker volume is annoying, and when you put the speaker on max volume the sound quality takes a huge dive.

This one confuses me. So you're complaining about the low speaker volume, but then you complain about the high volume too?

(oh, and the fix for low volume has been talked about ad nauseum in the form of Volume+)

i get no 4g signal in my home which essentially makes this phone a 3g device that I rely on wifi.

Do you otherwise have 4G on your property? Are you in a full or extended signal area?

Your choice of phone is unrelated to a developer's inability to update their apps for ICS. You should separate that from the overall experience, because the phone has nothing to do with it.

They're expanding it monthly. They just don't make big announcements about it anymore because there isn't a need to.

i forgot to mention that you are quite limited with ring tones as well.
...what?

Adding more ringtones, notification tones, and alarm tones, is as easy as creating three folders on the phone and dragging and dropping them into it. Its about as easy as you can get.

What do you want...an update every month? Fast updates means it will be one of the first devices to get a new update WHEN AVAILABLE, not that it will get more frequent updates.

Tell me...Which (stock) devices out there are running newer versions of ICS than your Nexus? There are still new devices shipping with Gingerbread and most probably wont see ICS for weeks/months/at all.

When other devices are getting their updates sooner than you, then start complaining...until then, relax man.

As for your other issues, I'm not having any of those, so I can't comment there...

i forgot to mention that you are quite limited with ring tones as well.

Ringtones? Really? Connect it to a computer and put as many ringtones as you want on there.

People really pick the silliest things to complain about...
I understand people complaining about issues with the phone not actually working...I understand that and would complain too if I was experiencing the same issues...but to complain about lack of updates (when you have the only ICS phone out), ringtones, or the fact that they changed the name of the marketplace to the Play Store, or one of the other many ridiculous complaints I've heard lately.

Sorry to be so blunt, but I think with all the REAL issues that seem to be plaguing some of these phones, to complain about trivial stuff is a bit silly. It seems like people's expectations of phones these days is a little unrealistic...everytime something new/exciting comes out, its never enough and people need to pick it apart and complain about the slightest little things.

Meh, I'm done...I'm gonna go play with my awesome Nexus.

Whoa. Someone failed statistics.

You are not a majority of users. You cannot generalize your experience to everyone else. I am on my original Nexus and have had no issues that needed an exchange. You will find (very quickly) that you are, by far, in a minority.

I have one of the good phones, but say 1% of the phone are bad, the chances off someone getting 4 of them should be really really small

Not necessarily. If they're all coming from the same store, it could be the batch of phones they got. Or something could have happened in shipping. There are about a thousand variables that would go into those stats.

How does the screen look at very low brightness levels? Specifically for reading web pages. I know earlier AMOLEDs either tinted blue or just looked dirty and washed out.

Only because April is next week...I would wait it out. Just to have another phone to choose from. I've been saying this...wait too long and you will start running into new phones coming out. But choice is never a bad thing in my book. At the same time dont try to chase the latest n greatest....thats a race you will never win.

Whoever didnt get the Bionic, Rezound, G Nex, RAZR, Maxx, LG Spectrum, Droid 4, iPhone 4S..yes I said it..lol... by now should just wait it out.

For me...if I dont see increases in battery life....I will probably get the Maxx or finally get an external battery for my RAZR. Like in the PC world...I got on the dual core bandwagon real late, have yet to have a quad core PC. I really cant see me needing or using quad core to its full potential on a phone...

Then the whole wants n needs thing. Depending on yours...the G Nex might be the only phone you will want.

Ok. Regarding the ring tones, you cannot simply go into Settings -> Sound -> and then set ringtones for emails, text, mms, voice calls, voice mails, etc. Thats why I meant. My use of the word limited was wrong. For voice calls, i can set it in the settings menu, for email, i have to go into the email client, for mms and text gotta go their respective settings menus, etc. just isn't efficient for me. I would have liked to have it all in one place.

I'm glad you can text images just fine. I can't. I send a pic to my wife and the phone constantly says "Sending" and she never gets it, whether I'm on wifi, 3g, or 4g. I can receive pics just fine. Same thing with emailing pictures, I would expect when you attach a few pics to an email and your on wifi, that message should get sent pronto! but my gmail client hangs and hangs and hangs, and my emails are never sent if they have picture attachments. As a matter of fact, if I attach a picture to an email and send it, the message is lost forever, it doesn't even store the message in drafts while its sending.

speaker volume / quality on this phone is lousy. I think this is generally known. Yes, the stock speaker volume is quite quiet, however if you are using the earpiece speaker or the speaker phone speaker in conjunction with the volume+, you simply cannot use the phone on max volume because the sound is very tinny and distorted. Its difficult for me to understand the person speaking. I do have the speaker volume app (volume+) installed which seems to magically close itself all the time, or the phone is killing it. Regarding Volume+, louder does not imply clearer.

Regarding apps, yes I understand, they are third party software, and unrelated to the phone. However, when your talking about user experience, and an App works perfectly on one phone, and not on your new one, it definately affects your experience. Correct me if I'm wrong, but big developers did have this phone available prior to release didn't they?

I do not have 4g on my property. I don't really understand what you mean by Full or Extended service. I live 35 mins outside one of the first cities to have 4g. Its a major city.

I own both the Droid Razr and the Galaxy Nexus. I had the Razr and liked it quite a bit. I damaged the phone (my fault I dropped it - no case) - and while I am waiting for the exchange unit I purchased the Galaxy Nexus. Both are stock OS by the way.

My honest opinion (and it is only my opinion) is that the Razr is the much better phone. I like the form factor of the GN better, but other than that I will be back to using the Razr ASAP.

First, the reception (on both LTE and WiFi) is substantially better on the Razr. In areas where I was getting 4G on the Razr, I am frequently getting only 3G on the GN. In my bedroom, I was able to connect to the WiFi in my house on the Razr - but cannot on the GN.

Second, the battery life on the Razr is MUCH better than on the GN. Not even close. I'm not sure if it's because of ...

Third, smart actions do wonders for battery life on the Razr. I downloaded Tasker for the GN, and have started to play with it, but the smart actions make the process much simpler on the Razr.

For my purposes, I would definitely choose the better reception and better battery life of the Razr over the fact that the GN has ICS. For day to day usage the operating system doesn't make that big of a difference to me (yes ICS is nice, but not that functionally different that GB) - and certainly doesn't make up for the bad reception and battery life of the GN.

Good luck whatever you decide.

but to complain about lack of updates (when you have the only ICS phone out)

So its unrealistic that they haven't ironed out basic bugs when it's the only phone of its kind? Cell phones aren't evolving like they used to. They aren't changing sooo much that the software has to be radically different when you release a new product. I DO expect less bugs and better fit and finish on new devices. That's just me.

Actually i haven't failed statistics. My sample size albeit small only 4 phones, but 4 out of 4 were garbage, that's not random buddy, it's actually pretty sad.
Stop drinking koolaid, you're starting to sound like an apple fanboy. Go look at Razr Maxx forum, their little problems and nitpickings are kindergarten compared to problems we have here on GN forum.
Sitting next to a person with a regular Razr and he has -76DB and I have -110DB is not fun.

This phone needs to be recalled and when updated re-released.

In all honesty, seeing how some people have these problems and others dont makes me believe its a hardware problem, not software. All the updates in the world wont help you out if your handset it messed up.

I dont see how it could be a software issue if it only affects some phones.

You can go into the settings for each of your gmail accounts and set a specific tone for an account. You can also set a specific ring tone for much the same way.

It sounds like something is either wrong with your phone, or your service. I have zero problems attaching pics to emails, or text messages.

That is a problem with the app developers not the phone.

Hint: I'm not buying phones for the population at large.
I got the GN for myself and 4 out of 4 were defective. That's good enough statistics for me to conclude that GN has serious problems. I understand that in general 4 out of 100k is not a large enough sample size

I personally really like my nexus. I got it on release day and have no issues. However when I went to Dallas, Texas last weekend my phone freaked out. 4g dropped every five minutes and I always had no data and grey bars and rebooting galore. It would screech and whine on calls and battery lasted for about 2 hours max!! I wanted to run it over. As soon as I left Dallas it was like nothing happened. I have no issues since and none beforehand so I am not sure what was happening but it seems like some of the issues on this phone are area specific.
