Should I root my fascinate?

Hey guys I'm sure there are plenty of these posts but I would appreciate some opinions. I love my set up for my fascinate unrooted (launcher pro and some good Widgets and what not) but I have read that removing bloatware as well as using setcpu would help to increase battery life. So I have two questions... is this true and would I be able to keep my set up easily?

Also I don't know much about rooting but does it void the warranty even if you flash back to the original fascinate rom?

Thanks!

Hey fbomb,

1.lets see, yes you can keep your launcher pro settings.

2.i dont know about cpu clocking as im just focusing on rooting and roms for now, perhaps someone else can chime in.

3.yes it voids it if you walk in with your phone still rooted, but a simple odin flash to stock will fix that in 2minutes.

Alright I'm glad to know it wont be completely voided if I root. It's also nice I can keep my set up. I'll definitely keep considering. Still not confident in my ability to though!

Heh I rooted a few hours after I got my phone and realized I was stuck with bing.

If I were to get the dl09 root would it leave my set up as is and just take out bloat and bing or would it go to tw again?

Rooting alone does not make any changes. It just gives you Superuser access. Much like having administrative privileges on a PC. Rooting just gives you the ABILITY to make more powerful changes that you don't have access to without it.

Ahhh well that makes much more sense now, that analogy helps me a lot. Thank for that. I just hope I don't screw my phone up too much if I decide to try to root it! :P

FWIW, I jumped in this evening and did it, used the one click root on my Fascinate and it went without a hitch. Then I followed the instructions to move the bloatware, did that, and I cannot believe the speed of this little machine now. Everything moves faster. Can't comment on battery life yet, will no more tomorrow when it goes all day.

Keep us updated, bud. That's the same thing I'm looking to do to my phone; keep it pretty much how it is but get rid of VCrap. If that gives a little bit better battery life to boot, awesome.

I can't give a comparison to a totally stock, unrooted phone, because I've never run one for more than an hour, but I can easily achieve 24 hours with heavy use. I have seen another phone I manage, which is used much lighter, go for approximately 4 days on a single charge. Both are running stock DL09 ROMs that are manually debloated and StupidFast v1.54 kernels.

There are wayy too many different things you can do with this phone..the more I read, the more confused I get.. All the flashing and kernals..superclean, stupidfast...which to use..

More research I guess.

I agree Brandon I get lost as to which is the best/easiest/most like what I'm looking for. I think I'm just going to get DL09 with no bloat (I'm assuming that's the dl09 super clean) and possibly some kernal to overclock a bit! Thanks for the input guys!

Had a fun time afterwards. Went and did the clockwork mod with Odin, but ended up losing my haptic feedback due to using an uncorrected version (put parts of D101 on). I understand it has since been fixed. So with that, tried to install an updated kernel (Dl09 from Adrynalyn) but the phone would now not connect via usb anymore.

Long story short, went thru Dolphin, dl'd the file and ran it through ROM Mgr.. It installed or did whatever it did - still not sure. At any rate, still rooted, all the bloat still off so I guess it just did the kernel, not the full ROM.

So now I am thinking to try to flash the kernel to one of the stupidfast ones. Not sue about the rom's though.

I rooted my phone after about 3 months of owning it. Best decision I ever made. The only thing I did was download bloat freezer and it works great! It froze BING! If I hold my search key, Voice search is done through google. A simple hit of the search key, google search. All this ODIN and ROM and KERNEL just gives me a headache. I got what I wanted and that was it! And my battery life has improved quite a bit. There are some programs that are bloat that you didn't know were running. I froze them and no longer run, which means my battery life is better!

I rooted and mine this past weekend and i am running the Super Clean DL09 ROM and one of Adrynalyne's kernels and could not be happier with my phone. Since this is the first time I have ever rooted, flashed, etc.... all the forum post could not have been more helpful. Should have thought about doing this when i had my G1 :)
