should i update to froyo manually or just wait for the ota

@tedcousens, I fully agree with you. To the majority of phone users they have never heard of rooting or custom roms, etc. Doesn't mean anything to them. At the same time we do need to give people the option to consider this route as a means to get what they are waiting on from Sammy/Sprint or carriers.

I would like to see the Froyo upgrade drop already just to stop the endless talk of "wheres the update?" But I would guess to say its not going to live up to what everyone is expecting. Especially judging from the official update Fascinate owners received. Sure it runs, its good but it does have some bugs. Really its about no better than the "unofficial" leaked version that we have for the Epic.

I just believe its a pipe dream if people are really expecting the update to be smooth going and problem free. There hasn't been a single official Froyo release that hasn't been followed by (or waiting) mini updates/fixes to hammer out the issues. Who knows how long that could take from Sammy/Sprint, possibly never. They could release the update tomorrow, with bugs and then say there ya go.... Froyo.. now we have for filled our end of the bargain, any further Froyo support will not be addressed. I know it sounds horrible but it could happen just that way.

Another issue is, has Sprint/Sammy said anything/anywhere about the Froyo update fixing the GPS? Not that I can remember. So many are probably banking on the idea that Froyo will address this issue. I don't believe so, maybe I am wrong. If I am right there are going to be a lot of let down Epic owners.

Not to rain on your parade I'm just stating the obvious and trying to get all sides of the story looked at. Yours, general public and the "rooters" point of view.

But as I said from the start, you are correct in what your saying but there is also other sides to this story to. So keep posting we are listening. ;)

My gps didn't work with froyo at all. Eclair works. I would have kept froyo leak with bugs as this is bugged too as long as those things worked.

A this point I'm waiting to see what htc is releasing and if nothing worth getting I'll get the evo. (that is if I don't find a custom rom I like that works)

Do you have problems connecting to wifi with wep?

I couldn't connect to my home network but was able to connect to optimum wifi.

And how is your cell signal? Did you notice a difference from stock dk28 if you used it?

The only reason I flashed back was because I am in need of my phone and gps tonight. Couldn't mess with it at work.

No problems with wifi but I am using WPA2 security.

I never used the stock dk28 build but my cell signal with TER ROM seems a bit stronger than on 2.1 but I didn't really have any cell issues before.

I had to do one of the GPS fixes listed (I think it was #4) after flashing TER but now I can even get a lock in my basement in about 10 seconds. The fact that all the GPS issues are obviously software related and no fix from Samsung will make me think twice about my next phone. Too bad because the hardware is better than anything else IMHO.

I have been running DK28 for over a month.. I am getting GPS lock down to 43 ft..

no complaints.. occasionally a bluetooth issue that only happens when using higher end BT device.. and I think I found the pattern of shutting the bt off to prevent the phone volume issues..

the benefits of leaked Froyo DK28 outweigh any problems , honestly I haven't experienced the glitches other are having here, of course i am also not installing custom Roms, i did with 2.1 but have decided to stick with simple DK28 and I am happy with performance.

hmm. Now I can't connect to my home wifi with 2.1. I'm going to assume its something with my router now. I will have to try the gps fix when I have the time with 2.2.

Upgraded to TrulyEpic 1.2 AC

It took a few tries, but I finally am happy with it.

What I have:
TrulyEpic Rebrith 1.2
Sprint Voicemail zip install
sms zip install
stock web browser zip install (the custom was problematic with double tapping)

I also switched to GO Launcher EX from AMLauncher. AMLauncher is OK, but I just like horizontal scrolling through Apps.

Something interesting that I picked up... You have to run Spare Parts twice, by changing settings to "fast" in order for the settings to stick.

Everything that I've tested works. This includes GPS (although I have to be outside, but this was always the case), wifi, 4g, 3g, all my apps, etc. For WIFI, i use WPA2 Personal on a wifi G connection. My router's the Linksys E2000, and i've never had wifi troubles with any of my ROMS or stock installs. I've had the EPIC 4G since Aug. 31st

So, the gps reset option 4 worked flawless. Works better than before.

Wil be testing 4g later.

The browser doesn't re format text when zooming. Am I missing am option here?

The Epic is going to get Froyo... they've spent too much time and effort working on it to give up now. Not to mention it's nonsensical not to upgrade 1 particular country's flavor of Galaxy S when the rest of the world get it.

It is supremely frustrating to me to see Samsung squander their reputation like this. I too am a previous (and unsatisfied) Sammy owner (of an Instinct) and I gave them the benefit of the doubt with the Epic mainly because of the keyboard and big, beautiful screen. But once again, top of the line hardware got marred by amateurish, shoddy software and a complete lack of support. Thank god for the modding community :D

Not to sound like an old fogey or anything, but I do remember the days before it was considered the norm to release a broken product and fix it ex post. Or not fix it at all, in this case. Where is the respect for the consumer? Becoming the largest phone manufacturer has gone to Sammy's head, and I for one won't be giving them any more of my dollars until they show a serious change in their attitude regarding software support.

There will be an official Froyo update for the epic.

OK, I've seen you post this in a couple places so I'm calling BS. Show the proof. And no, Sammy/Sprint saying it isn't proof, they also said it would be here before the end of 2010. So again, show us proof.

Show me proof it's not. By you or anyone else here saying it won't is also BS. And yes I have posted it in several threads and will continue to post it every time someone posts that it won't.

I understand how some of you are angry that it's taking so long but saying it isn't ever going to get the official update is pretty asinine.

Really?

I don't think it's so asinine. It's possible that they cannot come up with a decent update. It's honestly not a 'given'. It requires technology and brain power that over the last few months has clearly not been able to achieve a result. I don' t doubt that they have been working hard but there is no natural law that assumes that it will definitely happen. They could easily give up and make us wait another 3-6 months for Gingerbread. It appears that the engineering of the phone versus the software is causing problems. No guarantee that it will be resolved. I'm just sayin.

I will show you proof that it does happen.

Motorola Cliq XT left to die with Cupcake

Even though this is a different phone and different outdated version of OS, it shows that even with all the promises and attempts sometimes things don't work out as originally planned. The Moment would be another example, all the sudden Sammy and Sprint both just up and walk away from the Moment and replace it .. ..

So history does show that things can change. If Sammys statement is true saying they are trying to provide the best bug free upgrade to Froyo then who knows.... They could very well end up not being pleased with their testing and dump the whole idea.

I don't think your continuous posts "keithvetter" are going to help matters. I understand your supporting what you were told in the beginning but things do change sometimes. Like it or not...

We could all be wrong, we could all be right.. Just have to wait and see but time is definately not on Sammy/Sprints side at this time as Gingerbread/Honeycomb are getting more and more attention these days and not Froyo.

There are two sides to that coin. I don't think the continuous posts stating the epic won't be updated helps matters either.

@keithvetter, I agree. That is why before this recent "back and forth" started between everyone my stance was....

I will believe we are getting the update the day I log onto Android Centrals main page and it says "Official Froyo now pushing to the Samsung Epic 4g".

Until that day arrives I don't really think discussing the issue is even worth the effort anymore until that day comes or we here otherwise.

Can someone give me a link to "very simple" step by step instructions on how to get 2.2 on my epic. And also I guess if its better to root beforehand, please link me to that to. If it sounds easy enough even for a newbie like me I'll definitely do it! Thanks

See Below

Restore to Froyo DK28

New: Restore to Froyo DK28
0) Download and install the appropriate drivers for your Windows system:
32-bit drivers
64-bit drivers

Plug your Epic into your computer via USB and let Windows recognize your phone/configure the drivers. After Windows is done with the drivers, unplug your Epic.

1) Download the following:
Froyo DK28 (do not extract this file)
Odin3+v1.61

If you have problems with Odin recognizing or flashing your phone in the following steps, you should first try using a different USB port and/or cable. If you are still having problems, you can try uninstalling the Samsung drivers you downloaded from the link in Step 0, and download and install this driver (select "Software" at the bottom; it should say "Device(Install),USB Driver (Software) (ver.1.0)") instead.

2) Boot your phone into download mode by powering off your phone holding "1" on the keyboard and holding power until you see a yellow sign with an android digging.

3) Extract "Odin3+v1.61andepic.pit.zip" into a folder on your computer, then launch "Odin3+v1.61.exe".

4) Press the "PIT" button and select "victory_8G_100528.pit", then press the "PDA" button and select "SPH-D700-DK28-8Gb-REL.tar.md5". On the left side of the Odin screen, make sure only "Auto Reboot" is checked.

5) Plug in the USB cable (if it's done right you should see a yellow Com device light up in one of the rectangular boxes).

6) Click Start and wait until you get a green box at the top that says success. Your phone should reboot.

Note: DO NOT unplug your phone while Odin is flashing your phone. Unplugging early can cause your Epic to be permanently bricked. If Odin appears frozen/stuck, wait at least 5 minutes before unplugging and trying again (after 5 minutes any process Odin is attempting to complete will have ended).

If you get an error that says "md5 hash is invalid", try starting again from Step 1d and only use "SPH-D700-DK28-8Gb-REL.tar.md5", omitting the "victory_8G_100528.pit" file. You can also try removing the ".md5" from "SPH-D700-DK28-8Gb-REL.tar.md5" and flashing with and without the "victory_8G_100528.pit" file.

Troubleshooting
If you're having problems getting Odin to recognize your phone, try uninstalling the Samsung drivers you downloaded from the link above, and download and install this driver (select "Software" at the bottom; it should say "Device(Install),USB Driver (Software) (ver.1.0)") instead.

If Odin does recognize your phone but is failing during installation of the system files, you may have a bad download. Try downloading the files again.

Some users have had success by not including the .pit file in their installation.

If your phone turns off and does not respond at all, remove and replace the battery to get it working again.

If that information provided by addie_goodvibes isn't enough then please feel free to come over to the Epic 4G Rooting, ROMs, and Hacks section to ask any other question concerning this.

Thanks for the quick answer. I'm not sure if the above procedure roots my phone as well or is this done only after rooting. If so, what procedure do I use to root? And what do I do first? dk28 or root? Thanks for tolerating my ignorance!
