Should you do a factory reset when doing a major Android OS upgrade?

With Nougat hitting Nexus devices now, I feel that this is an appropriate time to ask something that has been bugging me ever since Nougat first came on the radar with DP1.

When doing an upgrade such as this, is it appropriate to do a factory reset as well? If so, should you do it after or before you upgrade?

For clarity, when I'm talking major upgrades, I'm talking about stuff like going from Marshmallow to Nougat. Updates within the same version (5.0 to 5.1 in Lollipop for instance) are what I'm calling minor updates and thus aren't part of this question.

This would actually be a good candidate for an "Ask AC" article given its timely relevance. As such, I give the editorial team permission to use this question in such an article.

Typically before I do a OS update as such, I make sure everything is backed up. And do the update. If I find things aren't working well, or sluggish, I will do a factory reset after the fact and restore my backup.
It is a good practice to do so, but not always necessary.

Pretty much my thoughts too. The only thing I do additionally is pull the SD card because I've seen an update completely erase one before even though it's not supposed to touch the card.
