Welp I know it shouldnt have to come to this but I got tired of Verizon dragging their feet and I rooted and got on the AOKP rom... I love this rom, much smoother and faster then the original.. Also I love the customization of this rom.. Now I need to read into kernals etc.. For those on the fence its really easy.. Just do a little research.. I have rooted before but with a nexus its a breeze... Took me longer to backup everything then actually root and flash lol.. I havent tried the diff radios but im looking to fix battery life first.. I had already unlocked the bootloader because I had a feeling this day would come with verizon at the helm but now all is well or at least quite a bit better then it was...

Just my own opinion (FWIW), but the whole point of this device is to root/rom it. If you bought this phone to leave it stock, well, that's kind of, well, not too smart.

If you are leaving it stock - then don't complain about the interminable wait for Verizon to release an update. We all know how slowly Big Red churns out updates for anything.

AOKP's Open Kang Project has an amazing rom - it's three clicks and you are up and running. The rom is much faster, MUCH better battery life, MUCH more features, custom themes, overclocking of the processor (if you dare), overclocking the graphics, etc., etc., etc....

This phone was MADE to be hacked and played with. I have no programming experience, but know my way around a computer - that's all you need. That and your usb cable.

Anyone needs any help - PM me, would be happy to get someone else started. My phone is amazing!! I have my home screen set up exactly as I like it - an amazing red theme!

Oh boy.. While I am surely with you.. no need to phrase things like "you're just not smart" or "that's what this phone is built for".... because no matter how correct you are you are just going to start another war thread out here in general :)

Good job, glad you took the plunge and are enjoying your phone now! No need to waste time, jump on the 4.0.4 radios and you should see some decent improvements in signal strength and 3G - > 4G handoff's, if applicable in your location. Check our own Zero Neck's thread for all you need, its as easy as flashing anything, just a minute of your time to upgrade them :)

As much as this phone may be rootable, 95% of the people that buy it don't even know what rooting is, so to say you shouldn't complain about this phone if you don't root it doesn't make any sense. The phone should just work well stock, and it does. Those of us who are a little more fanatical about our phones are just upset because we know that updates are coming (again, the general public has no idea they are even on the radar) so some of us root to compensate and I suppose maybe that's your point.

That said, I rooted my Fascinate and was happy with the advantages of it, but there were things on the phone that become unstable which is a big part of what has kept me from rooting this one.

I know this isn't the rooting forum, but 3 clicks to root eh? That sounds a little more tempting. Does it wipe the phone? Is the Kang rom considered best/most popular these days? (I know this is subjective)

AOKP is pretty much considered the standard these days. 100% stable and reliable and just an insane amount of features and customization options.
EDIT: Just wanted to add tho.. the developer scene for this phone is insane. Their are dozens of ROMs, most are very stable and have different looks and feels and different options. AOKP has just blown up insanely and has basically everything in it, but I hate to make it sound like that's your only choice. There are more options out there than you'd know what to do with for this phone, lol.

Unlocking your bootloader wipes everything, sd card included, but you gotta do it, and only have to do it once, lol. You can back up your important stuff to your computer from your sd before you do it anyway. And yeah, anytime you flash a ROM you should do a full wipe (not sd card too), but with MyBackup Root or TiBu you can restore your user apps with data and have yourself back up and running in about 30-40 minutes (with practice, lol, more noobish types might take an hour or so at first but its all easy) :)

i agree 100% with your first statement
i wouldn't worry about root breaking some of your stock features...this phone was built from "AOSP" and so are the ROMs. i also had some issues in the past that i learned to deal with in terms of ROM's breaking functionality...however, i have never experienced anything wrong with a ROM on this phone

as for the 3 clicks...it may be that simple...honesly i cannot remember...but it literally took me about 20 minutes to unlock and root.
unlocking the bootloader wipes the entire phone..."SD card" and all. so just back that up before unlocking and put everything back on. Wugs root toolkit also can backup your apps and data before the process so you can put them back on easily after the process.
and IMO AOKP is by far the most feature filled ROM out there. Liquid is also pretty good, but i have had the best luck, smoothest experience with AOKP.

Some of us bought it because it's developer reference hardware, and we just phone that works without.voiding the warranty. On that count the Verizon GN is miserable failure.

Spending hours playing with the latest ROMs doesn't make you a technically-gifted person, it just means your time is worthless.

also, i totally agree it shouldn't have come to this. a phone should work from the get go...and verizon taking 5 months to push an update (one that actually fixes most issues like the 4.0.4 leak did) is ridiculous.
but i have said if from the get go.
either deal with the problems quietly and wait for the OTA
Get a different phone
or take an hour to download everything and do a little reading and Root/ROM this phone.

WTH does that mean? some, if not Most of us ROM simpley because it is Fun and a Hobby. I golf all the time...i really suck at it...doesn't mean my time is worthless:-\

as for the warranty claim...unlocking and rooting may void the warranty..but it is super simple to return back to stock and no one would notice the difference. yeah it may be un-ethical...but most warranty claims are hardware related, not software.

Lmao... says the guy whose time is much better spent trolling the general forums and hoping for some sort of sympathy that his phone no worky perfectly...

Releasing a phone with this many issues is unforgivable, and "just put a ROM on it!" isn't an acceptable remedy for Verizon/Samsung releasing half-baked garbage.

I'm on my third one since February and I know I'm not the only one.

Yeah, I guess a troll is a post with truth in it. Enjoy paying to beta test poorly designed hardware.

Ok, thanks. I guess I'll have to head over to the rooting forum and see if I can figure out how to do it. I can re DL all of my apps from the market and my google stuff is backed up so I should really just have to back up my pics before I wipe right?

I didn't pay to beta test any hardware. I paid to have an unlockable phone with tons of developer support and easily hackable / upgradeable whenever I want...... I have gotten more than my money's worth :)

Yeah pretty much. You will lose data for your apps (game progress, etc)... but only this one time. After that you will be able to back it all up with root apps like Mybackup, Appmonster, or TiBu. I want to say there is a way to root before you unlock the bootloader so that actually you can back everything up before you take that step... I'm fairly certain its doable but not sure how so sorry I can't help there. A little researching and I bet you could find out though.. just something to keep in mind if it was important to you.

What an incredibly arrogant thing to say. You are basically telling me, if you purchased this phone and choose to use it in a manner different than how you have chosen to use your phone, they are not smart.

Is that an order, or a request?

Well thank you very much for giving your opinion. Fortunately, you are not the law of the land in the world of Google, Android, or the Nexus for that matter. Each of us can choose how we are going to use our Nexus. What is not smart is listening to some keyboard warrior attempting to dictate to others how they should treat their phones.

in his defense, he never said this phone had to be rooted and ROM'd. he just said it was MADE to be rooted and ROM'd and i totally agree.

Hurling insults isn't going to sway anyone's opinion, lets try to be adult about it folks.

First, yes, the phone should work properly out of the box, that's common sense. No phone should have to have an alternate ROM installed just to make it perform correctly.

To say the time those who choose to put alternate ROMs on their phone is worthless makes absolutely no sense.
1. It doesn't take half as long as you seem to think it does.
2. Not one person in the world (not even the president) is 100% busy at all times with no time for doing something they want to do.

I rooted and ROM'd the heck out of my original Droid, but I did that so I could get it to work right on such a RAM-limited phone and to get a few extra features. My idea with the Nexus was that I could have a phone that works the right way entirely stock, WITHOUT having to root and ROM. The less I have to mess with my phone's OS and "innards", the better I like it, so to me, Nexus means "already clean, just enjoy your damn phone!". So, normally, I would not plan to mess with the stock experience.

But, lately I have been having a lot of redraws, which bugs me. Would a new ROM help with that as it did with the OG Droid?
