Shouldnt work this way, but forget Verizon I rooted.

in his defense, he never said this phone had to be rooted and ROM'd. he just said it was MADE to be rooted and ROM'd and i totally agree.

He stated if you bought it to leave it stock, it isn't too smart. That's an insult plain and simple.

People use the term "developer phone" too often and in the incorrect context. It's a developer phone for Google.
That doesn't mean the phone was meant for us to make changes anymore than the Droid X, Bionic, or Razr was. Each of those devices were rooted and have many ROMs available to install.
Not everyone is a tech geek. People buy a phone because they like it and even if they know absolutely nothing about root or ROMs, they have a reasonable expectation that the phone should work without doing anything to it other than turning it on.

Releasing a phone with this many issues is unforgivable, and "just put a ROM on it!" isn't an acceptable remedy for Verizon/Samsung releasing half-baked garbage.

I'm on my third one since February and I know I'm not the only one.

Exception, not the rule.

Keep defending all you like. Saying that people aren't smart if they choose not to root is being insulting.

Isn't part of having an open system like Android so that we have the ability to choose how we use our devices?

If you bought this phone to leave it stock, well, that's kind of, well, not too smart.

Damn. I wasted a lot of money getting a Computer Science and Mathematics degree at UCLA thinking I would be smart as a result. Maybe I should have majored in Psychology instead.

Some of us are non-smart by design. Read my tag line for an example.

absolutely....i didn't see his post about saying its not smart.

some choose to root and ROM...those people generall LOVE this phone.
some choose to keep it stock...those people are kinda hit or miss...some love it some hate it but live with it.
some choose to keep it stock and not do anything about it....those people need to do something about it...weather it be getting a new phone, dealing with the problem until an update comes, or dealing with it by rooting/ROMing.

coming to forums and complaining isn't going to do anything.

this whole "verizon Gnex update" thing reminds me of a saying.
"instanity is doing the same thing over and over (read: not doing anything) and expecting different results (read: having their phone magically work)"

Just my own opinion (FWIW), but the whole point of this device is to root/rom it. If you bought this phone to leave it stock, well, that's kind of, well, not too smart.

The statement that you said up top is not to smart.... As someone else stated 95% of people that buy phones out there know nothing about rooting or anything. They just pick a phone they like and buy it... Even this forums users are tiny compared to total android users.. Plain and simple.. Check the total number of users on this site and some of the other popular forums to the total number of android users.. Its very small.. Hell even all the users on this site dont root.. So that would make that number even smaller.

now with that being said what are some things that can help me achieve better battery life now that im rooted... Im going to do a little more research on radios before I mess with mine.. I need to see if the difference is even worth it or not..

different ROM/KERNEL/RADIO combos all effect battery life. you are just going to have to give it a shot though and give each combo a couple days to settle in. i have had the 4.0.4 leaked radios for 3 months. those are pretty standard i would say to give you better battery life since they seem to give better signal to the majority of people.

i am running the 4.0.4 radios, AOKP M5, and frankos M3 kernel. this setup gave me 14 hours of life, 2.5 hours screen on time, 30 minutes phone call, 30 or so texts, some camera usage, and about an hour and a half streaming pandora.

Yeah in terms of pure performance and battery life I think francos M3 kernel is just about the best I've run.

For roms.. AOKP M5 is probably the most customizable, feature-packed, and fully stable 4.0.4 rom out there.

And for radios.. Don't wait.. Hop on the 4.0.4 ones and you'll almost surely be happy with the improvements :)

Nothing to ever fear with this phone.. Anything you do that you later decide against or don't like, it's a piece of cake to undo. You can return it to complete stock condition in 5 minutes if you were so inclined.. So have fun with her!

Hmmmm I been hearing alot about Frankos Kernal... I may flash it today but I want to read a little more into kernals.. Just like to be informed before I go and just start doing stuff... Any threads you guys suggest to learn more about Kernals??

There are a few franco's threads. Also, the chatter thread, while consisting of a lot of chatter, is very informative.

I swear by franco. His kernel is the only kernel which plays amazingly well w/ my device. Imoseyon's Leankernel is a runner up. The stock kernel for M5--faux's--has never really done well with me.

same here...although frankos M2 kernal seems to be slightly better on battery life for my last ROM.
Franko's app is great as well, giving you even more control over the kernel. OC/UC, voltage, hotplug (disable 1 CPU core with screen off)and color control.

Yup. Not to mention you're supporting one of the hardest working devs out there right now.

So the people who picked up the Nexus for ICS aren't so smart?

Wow well thats good to hear... My nexus already is getting better battery life then when I had a stock rom... I have 45% left at 2pm and by now im normally dead.... If it can get even better with a kernel im all for it... That was bigger for me then even the signal... Only making it till 2pm with a extended battery just was unacceptable for me.. At work with very little use...

I can't recommend his work enough. His milestone builds are great for those that like stability, and his nightly builds are great to be on the "cutting edge" of kernel development. He's extremely dedicated and nightlies are frequent--sometimes 2 a day!

To the naysayers:
Your opinion on rooting would carry WAY more weight if you actually tried the rooting thing and then saying its junk. We recently had a poll in the rooting section that asked how satisfied you were after flashing a custom rom. Kinda few votes cos the thread got buried but most were very satisfied. Not one said they hated it and wanted to go back to stock. I would say almost 100% of the moderators and advisors on AC are rooted. The advantages are just too much to overlook.

It's a night and day difference with the user experience. Most say it fixes random reboots and signal issues.

So don't knock it if you haven't tried it. :)

(1) You should bump the thread. I'd be interested to see the results if more folks were polled.

(2) I've never rooted, I have no idea what you're talking about. O:-)
