Shouldnt work this way, but forget Verizon I rooted.

He stated if you bought it to leave it stock, it isn't too smart. That's an insult plain and simple.

People use the term "developer phone" too often and in the incorrect context. It's a developer phone for Google.
That doesn't mean the phone was meant for us to make changes anymore than the Droid X, Bionic, or Razr was. Each of those devices were rooted and have many ROMs available to install.
Not everyone is a tech geek. People buy a phone because they like it and even if they know absolutely nothing about root or ROMs, they have a reasonable expectation that the phone should work without doing anything to it other than turning it on.

I agree with this to a point; however, why any consumer would drop $300 or more on a piece of tech without knowing what they are getting themselves into is beyond me. While I agree researching and knowledge still isn't a fool proof way in getting a 100% working piece of tech, your odds are still greatly enhanced that you'll be getting what you want and are paying for. I'm sorry, I just don't feel bad for people who buy an expensive (and important...it is a phone/PDA) piece of tech without knowing what they are getting themselves into. I knew this was a Google developer phone, I knew it was running a brand new OS version which still had bugs, I knew Verizon would be slow to release official OS releases, etc. I expected there to be some difficulties; however, I bought this phone to root/unlock/mod and tinker with. Period. It doesn't take much to become informed with a piece of tech. I do this will all the purchases I make. I'm not going to drop $1500 or more on just any TV. I'm gonna research first. Same with a car. Buying a house or anything.

also glad i could give some inspiration. here is some more.
so yesterday was my typical day, charge all day at work, go home and use the phone like usual. i was about 50/50 wifi and 4g. from 4pm to 11:30 i only dropped 20%. it was absolutely rediculous. this was also with 5 "scramble" games, lots of forum browsing, 10 minutes of calls, 15 or so texts, i think screen on time was right under an hour (like 58 minutes)
usually with that usage i am at about 50% or a little under. i am SERIOUSLY impressed with this combo...so much so that i am debating wether or not to update when a new AOKP comes out. i usually update every new build...but this may just be too good to update from.

What an incredibly arrogant thing to say. You are basically telling me, if you purchased this phone and choose to use it in a manner different than how you have chosen to use your phone, they are not smart.

Is that an order, or a request?

Well thank you very much for giving your opinion. Fortunately, you are not the law of the land in the world of Google, Android, or the Nexus for that matter. Each of us can choose how we are going to use our Nexus. What is not smart is listening to some keyboard warrior attempting to dictate to others how they should treat their phones.

Paul,

I am truly sorry I used the wrong language. The whole point of my post was to show those on the fence how easy it is to make your VERY expensive smartphone do things that you would never have thought you COULD do with it based upon factory installed software. The knowledge required to do it can be gleaned with a few minutes of invested time and it's free! These wonderful folks invest a ton of time to do this with no expectations of being remunerated.

I do see, however, that you utilize a macbook - now I completely understand why you would never want to tinker with your phone - the Apple monopoly has you in its clutches - surprised you don't carry an I-thing....:-!

To the naysayers:
Your opinion on rooting would carry WAY more weight if you actually tried the rooting thing and then saying its junk. We recently had a poll in the rooting section that asked how satisfied you were after flashing a custom rom. Kinda few votes cos the thread got buried but most were very satisfied. Not one said they hated it and wanted to go back to stock. I would say almost 100% of the moderators and advisors on AC are rooted. The advantages are just too much to overlook.

It's a night and day difference with the user experience. Most say it fixes random reboots and signal issues.

So don't knock it if you haven't tried it. :)

Very well said - My phone went from mediocre to amazing!! My favorite color is red and I found a developer who has skinned ICS to have all red icons and text - I couldn't be happier!!

Like I've said all along--this phone, once unleashed, is the best Android device currently available on the market. In my humble opinion, of course :).

Thank you for once again expressing your rather smug opinion.

OK- I know supposedly a new OTA is coming, but you all are talking me into the benefits of unlocking and rooting to get the best of my phone. So, I'd like to begin. I've been looking at Wugs toolkit and cyber warrior's. Is there a benefit to using either one or do they work the same? I like the step by step and pictures for Warriors.
Also, I notice a lot of people skip over the "just back everything up before unlocking " but can't find anywhere of how to do this. Is it as simple as connecting it to my PC and dl'ing the photos? Also, I know my apps will be saved with Google but what about things like contacts, phone settings, etc. Thanks for any help.

I rode the root-and-ROM carousel with my release day EVO, and before that I played with roms on my WinMo Mogul. That's all well and good but I have better things to do right now with my time and I need a reliable phone.

Saying "It runs great once you root it and ROM it, best phone on the market" is like saying, "A Honda Civic is great once you change the engine and tear out 800 lbs, fastest car on the market."

Some of us bought it for two things: ICS, and the fact that it's a dev reference hardware phone and new apps will be written with it in mind as a target. Saying that those of us who did that are stupid for not spending hours playing with the latest ROM thrown together by some guy on a forum is rude and out-of-touch with the average phone buyer (who returned the GNex in record numbers from what my Verizon store rep told me).

If it doesn't function out of the box, it isn't any better than a car you purchase and need to waste time on to get working. Those get recalled and fixed.

(IMM76K may fix all my problems with the phone but waiting nearly six months for a patch to fix problems with a flagship phone is ridiculous.)

By the way, today my third phone did the same thing my previous two did: Data would lock up and the radio couldn't be toggled with airplane mode, so I had to reboot.

Best phone on the market.

No, just disgusted with people who are compelled to display their inability to either comprehend or attempt to comprehend that their way is not the only way or the right way. Included in that is the need to call names and make personal attacks to those who hold varying opinions.

It does function out of the box, though. There are some issues, obviously, but if you're going to turn one generalization into a decent specific point (your Civic analogy), then you can't use another generalization (that it doesn't function out of the box) to back up your logic--it breaks whatever logical deduction exists.

FWIW, this is my 4th device.

If you're on your fourth device (exchanged GN) and aren't disgusted yet with Samsung, Verizon, and Google, you are the perfect customer and I have a nice bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

In all fairness from the time I dropped paints sat on the toilet dropped a duice or 2. I flashed my nexus to m5 aokp new gapps and new theme. Rebooted and just waiting for phone apps to upgrade. It really is simple and not very time consuming to flash. And yes this phone is a beta phone its built for developers to work on there apps to comply with ics. Unformatilly it sold to the general consumer who have no idea what they are getting. They just see ics. And this phone doesn't sell a lot also. Why because its plain and consumers want skins. Ie wiz blur sense etc.

Heh. Unfortunately for your bridge sales, I'm not quite as stupid as that statement makes me to be ;).

I'm on my 4th for nothing related to any of the complaints here.

(1) BestBuy squirted my phone with Zagg juice, volume rocker ceased working.

(2) The CLN replacement was scratched/scuffed.

(3) The CLN replacement had dead pixels and weird crap in the screen.

(4) Works like a charm.

I kept it b/c of the very point I made (and I even made a topic about this stuff a while ago)--for my purposes (rooting/flashing), this phone is the best Android device out there. It not only meets most of my expectations, but exceeds them in many different ways. The development support--bar none--is unrivaled by any other device out there.

Well, by your own admission, you bought the phone to play with. I bought it because I wanted a phone first and foremost. It fails at that.

It could for you. I've only ever had one dropped call (conveniently, the first device). And with the older leaked radios (and now the new ones) my signal has been fine/decent. So for me, it functions as I need it to be on all levels.

Look at my device history, too. The first is a freak/stupid accident. The middle two are products of the terrible CLN program that Verizon runs. The fourth is aces.

By the way, today my third phone did the same thing my previous two did: Data would lock up and the radio couldn't be toggled with airplane mode, so I had to reboot.

Best phone on the market.

Maybe I just got lucky? 1st one and it works wonderfully (although I have ventured into certain areas of my state where I could not hold a signal and caught a glimpse of what others must feel)

I would also say I owned a Stratosphere briefly before the Nexus and was REALLY plagued with the issue you mention.

Data that frequently locks up so I'm left shaking the phone and wondering why I cannot access anything. Toggling in and out of airplane mode in an attempt to get the signal to reconnect.

I'm assuming Samsung is using different radio hardware for the Nexus and the Stratosphere but perhaps there is a hardware component here in addition to the software?

I've flashed the unofficial 4.0.4. radios and noticed better voice quality in calls and none of the microphone drop-out (placebo effect?) but haven't noticed much in the way of changed signal strength for my phone

Long story short, very pleased with my 1 Nexus but having had a Stratosphere and having had similar issues with it, I can only imagine how frustrating it would be to replicate those issues on a supposed flagship device
