Show of hands, who else has "/data/system/throttle"?

I just noticed this folder: /data/system/throttle on my phone. Looking around online, it seems that this is a sign that you are being throttled by some carriers. T-mobile no longer uses this method to throttle data, but maybe VM is going to use it? Does anyone else have this folder with some random files in it?

As far as I can tell, I still have the same crap-tastic speeds I always have (~500 kbps up and down). I haven't used 3G in my new month, but my last month I got up 10 gigs.

I found this method for removing the throttling from the framework: xda-developers - View Single Post - [GUIDE][OutDated] How to defeat data throttling... ideas?
But I haven't tried it yet.

Does anybody know anything else about this?

I just tried the services.jar thing that they posted to see if it will work. It works maybe yes maybe no. One thing I suggest to others if you want to try this is to use apk manager and rename the jar file to .apk. Also make sure you have the latest apktool.jar and aapt. So far no problems except what was mentioned in the thread

Yep, I have them here, one file has a dash followed by numbers, the other file is a temp file.
I copied them off and opened them, lots of numbers separated by colons in each.

Not knowing what they stand for, I don't want to post them (I can PM them to you Marzz if it helps).

I doubt this will help my speeds anyhow, as I rarely break much over 1meg here.

No need to PM them, but thank you. Apparently they are generated by services.jar. They are logging your 3g usage for the purpose of throttling. I'm surprised that I didn't notice them before. Maybe VM just started to use it. I don't know.

The link I posted above shows how to edit services.jar to remove the built-in throttling routine, but I got a bootloop when I tried it.

Maybe it would work with a different rom. It would probably be best if the throttling service was removed when the rom was being compiled (wink wink). :D

I too see that folder, one dashed numeric filename, one numeric filename, and temp. all 3 hold very similar numeric info interspersed with colons.
I dare vm to throttle me anyway, I rarely get 200k or better anyway, even though I use I heinous amounts of data the only real speed difference I've noticed was overnight july 4 when no-one else was on the network and I got 500k/sec for the first time ever.
I average a lousy 20-30k most of the time, but doubt I'm being throttled.

Got it. Not a big deal to me I have to use wifi at the house signal is so crappy, but I would'nt mind getting rid of big brother if theres a way.

Does anyone have an old old old nandroid backup they could load to see if the throttle folder is in there? It would be interesting if this is a new thing that is happening, but if we have always had these files, then it is all moot.

I haven't heard of anyone actually being throttled, that they know of which woudl make it a wasted effort.
We get what's left of 3g only, anyhow, so you likely won't get much from this.

Regardless, there hardly seems enough info there to be any sort of log file.
It looks more like a unique identifier, either frequency or user id, possibly encrypted, maybe a location in the temp? Seems more plausible.

This was why I offered to send mine, then you could see if they are identical or anything. I looked for my phone #, but didn't check any other id numbers.

I have a stock nan from when I first got my phone that I'll check in a bit

I can't imagine it being anything new.

I would love to see if it's on an early (2.2.1) non-rooted device.

The stock ROM did have the throttle folder with some additional files that I don't currently have.

Well, I heard vmu recently stated that they WILL start throttling the ToS violators, meaning people which OBVIOUSLY are using wifiAP, but they also stated this would only apply to about 2% of their users.

In know they like to claim that it only effects 2% of users, but it is very easy to hit 2.5GB in one month. That makes me think the 2% stat is put out to make you feel like it'll never happen to you. At 500 kbps, you'll get about 11 hours of use for the month before you are throttled.

Yeah but has it been stated that they're gonna throttle you after 2.5gb? I never saw a specific number. I think with them having "unlimited" data, they wouldn't start throttling until way past that. I really don't know why it matters that much though, I mean dies it really cost them anything per gig of data used? It just seems like whether 100 or 1,000,000 gigs are used, they don't pay anymore... we just get charged more (or throttled).
