Can anyone recommend an app which shuts down unwanted apps, please?
BatterySaver used to do this, but after an upgrade, it stopped. (pressure from Google?)
Alternatively, is there some way I can stop 'unwanted' apps from starting automatically when the phone is booted?
Thanks

No, no app can "know" which apps you don't want running. What's "unwanted" to you may be vital to me.

You can use Greenify, but if the phone isn't rooted, you have to manually hit the kill switch every so often. You could try Doze: for Better Battery Life. Or you could use the Back button when you finish with an app - that shuts the app down. (Home just runs the launcher, leaving the app running. And yes, even if you didn't install a launcher, your phone has one - it displays the home screens and app drawer, among other things.)

As far as automatically starting apps, there are boot apps that control what runs at boot and what doesn't. Look over some startup managers.
