What type of display will the bionic have. I know 4.3 is the size. However I was wondering the resolution and will it match or surpass the iphone. I really like my droid x but I feel the retina display is just a lot clearer and better. I could be wrong just my opinion.

It will have a qhd (quarter HD) resolution LCD display, 960 x 540. I believe from the videos I've seen it will be a IPS panel. It has the same number of vertical lines as the Iphone 4 but a bit fewer horizontal ones (landscape orientation). This is because its a 16:9 aspect ratio vs the Iphone's 3:2. The Iphone still has a better pixel density primarily because it has a baby 3.5" display. I would gladly trade the density for a larger screen.

Thanks for the reply. I am new to the android forum. Was a bb storm sucker for a year. Love my droid x. I have just caught the smartphone fever. Just like every electronic thing I own. Home theater computer. Now phone. I just get caught up in shiney new toy feeling. Anyway thanks.

I tend to agree I would rather have the larger screen. However why not go to the next level. I really feel that is the only thing the iphone has over the droid selection of phones not sure on the Samsung amoled screen haven't really checked it out for comparison

Yeah, you are like us! 16:9 ratio is premium real estate, nothing truncated there....I am glad Droid by M isn't shrinking screens to have better specs....I have seen a 3.5 retina.....nothing I want in a 1/2 thousand dollar device...

So do you guys think there is a direct correlation between the size of screen size and resolution. I'm not sure its the same but tvs seem to nit have that issue. Or are there limitations based on the type of material used for the screen which might not allow for greater resolution.

Not sure what you're referring to, but TVs do have an issue with size and resolution. For instance, a "general" rule of thumb is that you'll want to get a 1080p TV for TVs 42" and greater (smaller sizes will not be able to tell much of a difference between 720p and 1080p). The concept, in layman's terms, is that the pixels on a small display get larger when going to a larger display given a constant resolution. Therefore, the noticeable detail to the naked eye can become more pronounced on larger displays unless the resolution is also increased.

I don't think its so much a technological problem, but more that its just not thought to be as needed on larger screens. The reason is that as the screen size increases the farther away you can be from it and still comfortably watch it. As you get farther away from the screen a lower and lower pixel density is needed to be imperceptible to the human eye.

Think of it this way if i put two cones next to each other and was standing 10 feet away I would clearly be able to tell there are 2 cones. But now if i was 300 yards away (just a made up number) they would be very hard for me to tell apart and may just look like a single spec off in the distance.

Very well put. As far as the tvs. I was referencing that they don't have problems with resolution on larger screens granted cost is a determining factor. I was also curious as to the type of material used on said screen in what it is able to produce in terms of quality. I'm new to the phone tech thing and am just gathering as much info as I can. I really am learning a lot from all of the replys so thank you very much. Also is 4.3 the top end size or will someone go larger. A

You would trade density for that? You're a sucker then, sorry. You bought into their marketing machine if you think pixel density is more important than screen tech. I can understand if you wanted smaller screen over larger, but if this does have IPS and awesome brightness then why would you care about pixel density that you can't even see unless you're an inch away from it?

I think you misunderstood him. He said he would gladlu trade the higher pixel density (ppi) for a larger and sligtly less dense screen, As would I. Bigger screen = less eye strain and with the qHD resolution, it will be about as sharp as the Droid 3.7 screen. The Attrix wil be about as sharp as the LG Ally screen. Only thing that I would want more is for th scren to be super amoled + as opposed to lcd. The colors and contrast are amazing on amoled tech.

I also with Motorola had AMOLED or Super AMOLED. Both displays are superior to all the rest, including the iPhone 4 (I've seen it and the Droid Incredible AMOLED looked just as good). But Samsung owns the technology and apparently is not in a selling mood right now (supply problems).

The iPhone 4 beats the pants off of any generic AMOLED device, thanks to the ****ty Pentile matrix that the AMOLED screens use. Going from the AMOLED of the nexus One to the iPhone 4's display was like going from a CRT TV to a 1080p LED flatscreen. Yes, the differences are that great thanks to the AMOLED's subpar color reproduction, and fuzziness because of the pentile matrix.

The ONLY screen that I've seen that meets or beats the iPhone 4's is Sammy's SAMOLED displays that are in the Galaxy S phones. In sharpness, color reproduction, EVERYTHING, they are directly comparable in quality to the iPhone's.

If the Bionic's screen is indeed IPS, it could be the first non-Samsung display to give the iPhone a run for its money. (The SLCDs HTC has been using come close, but they're still a fair ways away.) Because Motorola is touting it so heavily, I would say that it very well could be.

Not sure how, but you clearly misunderstood me. You are agreeing with me.

I will preemptively accept your apology :p

never mind, free bump,,

Since thread is about the Bionic display...does anybody know how this screen will react outdoors, in the sun? I read that the Super Amoled displays were hard to read outdoors...my Storm2 is very easy to ready, as I know the iPhone's is easy to read outdoors - any thoughts on the Bionic? Thanks!

Doesn't matter on screen with VZW implementing compression technology your pictures and videos you dl will look fuzzy blurry etc boo on VZW and iPhone
