I currently have the Palm Treo 800W and it has a handy switch on it that silences the phone completely. No ringer, no alerts, etc. It's nice because I can just look at it an know it's silenced.

I'm getting the HTC Evo next month and I've looked at a lot of forums and haven't seen a clear answer to how this works on an Android device. It appears you just keep pushing the volume down switch over and over to turn off the ringer. Unclear if this totally silences the device. I'd assume that on the screen you'd see some indicator of volume level.

Is there a standard method for Android to silence it quickly and easily?

Thanks,

I have the Incredible...and I don't know if it works the same as the Evo. You toggle the volume all the way down and it goes to silent (it will show and icon that it is silenced). If you toggle down one more time, to goes to vibrate (once again will show you a vibrate icon).

On the Eris, anyway, if you press and hold the power button it brings up a menu that includes the option to silence the phone. I'm not sure if all Android phones are the same, though I suspect that they are. HTC Sense phones with 2.1 (Hero, Eris, Incredible, EVO, etc.) should also have a widget that can three-way toggle audio to on/vibrate/silence.

If I slide the slider on the lock screen the opposite of the direction to unlock on my Droid it silences the device.
