When I charge my phone with the original OneX charger, it says (USB) instead of (AC), even though it's plugged into an outlet. Am I overlooking something simple, because it takes forever to charge like this and is really annoying. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you are using the original charger and the original cord, it should say AC.
At least my International version operates that way.

A lot of this depends on how the Charger is wired internally:
If I use the original cord with an iphone charger it says USB.
If I use the original cord with a Nook charger it says AC.

I have an Anker Battery Pack:
With the original cord in the Anker 1amp port it shows AC.
With the original cord in the Anker 2amp port it shows USB.

With the Anker cord in either port it shows AC.

So there are two ways the phone can be told to charge at USB mode, by the wireing in the charger or the wiring in the cord.

Make sure you use the original cord. (Or experiment with different cords).
