Skype?

Blegh..I hate these exclusive deals. They end up screwing over people...Skype is the most popular and BEST VoIP period...and because of an "Exclusive!" deal the other carriers get screwed over. Bad business in my opinion.

Probably good business from the point of view of Skype. Verizon presumably had to deliver a significant sum for that exclusivity - obviously more than Skype expected to make by not entering into the deal.

Here is a Skype Beta. I have been using it for chatting, I have not tried it for Voice. Someone mentioned that it might only work on 3G.

i wrote skype and samsung about this.... and still haven't heard anything about why ALL android users are not allowed access to skype.... the iphone has it with AT&T, why not all.... feeling a bit disciminated against.....

Its all about the paper... Its not a 'FOREVER' contract, just a period of exclusivity for Android (and I think Blackberry). Personally, I think its moot without video chat, and then they have the nerve to yell at Fring. What BS.

Skype Mobile with video support coming to Android Market later this year? -- Engadget

We're betting big on video, and we intend to set the bar on mobile video calling, and it's something we're going to do this year.

We will be bringing a direct to consumer app to the Android marketplace later this year. This application will be available for all consumers globally to download regardless of carriers. (i.e. similar to how we offer the iPhone app today)

Need Sype or alternative for voip calls.. iphone works, ipad works

Canadian just about to upgrade my Blackberry for a Rogers Galaxy S Captivate

but if I can not get skype or some data based phone app.. this could almost be a deal breaker.
the blackberry may have this MobileMiser to allow voip type calls or call back calls.
but last month I did 1500 minutes with $185 of additional call min over their maximum min package.. 35 cents per min YIKES.

so if the Android does not allow something like skype or fring or MobileMiser .. then geeeez my wifes 3g iphone does and man i just may have to go with another iphone this time until they get it sorted out or heaven forbid I may have to stick with my dinky bold screen and use something like MobileMiser

$185 per month extra for 1 year is ~$2,200 ...a LOT OF MOOLA

BTW skype, toktume on my Ipad are both working well except ipad is not allowing a bluetooth head set.. darn darn darn

so far apple is winning this battle

Nimbuzz allows you to do chat through Skype - but you can only have one active account at a time (I have 3 - one for work, one for home and one for my side business). It was too complicated to have to remove the active account each time I needed to chat with someone else, so I uninstalled it. I could have consolidated 2 of them, but not the third one.

I'd still like an official Skype client working with me instead of against me so I'll wait. I would like video chat but essentially..Skype is a VoIP..and the best I must add so having a VoIP is always adequate over a perk like video chat.

As I understand it, before the Verizon exclusive, there was an Android app called Skype Lite. This app was pulled from the market when the Verizon deal went down. The app is still around; however, to install it, you must root your phone as this is considered a third party app now.

I posted the Skype Beta - which i would call Skype Lite on page 1.

You don't need to root to install 3rd party apps - (sideload) - this is easily done via various tools, but has to done via the PC. Android SDK and ADB make it quite easy.

I don't think that Skype is exclusive to Verizon as i believe it is available on Iphone 4.

I think people are saying that Skype for Android is exclusive to Verizon right now, not that it's exclusive to Verizon in general.

Regarding Nimbuzz, I ran into some strange bugs. Either the other side couldn't hear me or I couldn't hear them, etc. Either way, nowhere near the functionality of the Skype app on my old iPhone.

Does Skype Lite support Skpe to Skypcalls? I can only see an option for chatting with my Skype contacts

I tried to install it on the HTC evo (third party apps accepted) but the install fails. Thanks for the apk though!

I agree, while exclusivity hurts customers it helps their wallets. Bad business IMHO because without customers, there is no business. They can trade apps and make exclusive agreements all day long, but without people to purchase them... SOL!

It doesn't appear too. The calling function, just seems to launch the built in dialer and make a cell connection. Maybe if i tried it with Wifi on.............
