slide down lock

What do you mean? If you mean, you don't want that there anymore...

I downloaded an app called "No Lock." This lets you bypass that slide down to unlock deal. The downside is that not only does the unlock button, um, unlock your phone, but so does pressing the volume buttons. I only use this feature when the D'Inc isn't in my pocket.

Nice find!
I've been looking for a way to unlock/wake up my phone by pressing the trackball (I'm not rooted yet).
This works great for that and I've always thought slide to unlock was incredibly redundant at least for me. I don't think I've ever hit the power button on accident, on the contrary I have to try very hard to hit the power button (I regrettably used an Innocase II) even when in my pocket (yeah I know... I wouldn't really know if I hit it on accident if it was in my pocket, but I just don't think it happens)

I agree it would be nice if the volume buttons didn't unlock the phone as well, but oh well, I can live with that.

My only slight concern is I'm wondering if the phone is really sleeping when this app is running. I would think that maybe the app would have to be actively running even when the screen is off to allow for it to work properly, but honestly I have absolutely no idea if that's true or even makes any sense...just speculating

I have and use No Lock and when enabled it does run in the background. But that doesn't mean the phone doesn't sleep.
To see what is currently running:

Menu->Settings->Applications->Running Services

I believe some of the programs found in the running services section aren't necessarily open but a service required by the program is. (hence the name)

For example:
I use chomp SMS and use the security feature that requires a pattern to unlock in order to view my SMS messages. When I look in running services the security service for chomp SMS is running. Not necessarily chomp itself.

No Lock however is such that it runs all the time when enabled. There are no components of No Lock to turn on and off.

Based on a comparison of my awake time and my sleep time with no lock enabled, I would have to say without a doubt the phone is sleeping with no lock on.
No Lock away without fear.
