Smart Alert turns screen on?

Hi all,

Whenever I reach for my phone, it vibrates via smart alert but also turns on the screen automatically to show me the notification. Is this normal? To my knowledge smart alert is just supposed to vibrate. I'm on Verizon if that helps.
