Sms message issue

My issue currently is when i am in the chat window chatying with someone every incoming message in that window to person i am chatimg with my tone notification goes off
If they send me 10 messages in 5 seconds its goes off 10x becomes annoying when chat is already open i tried csnt find how to shut it off
If i do silent then i dont here any notificatiom from anyone using blackciew 9800pro
On my s8 plus i get notification check who texted and reply back we have conversation and its quiet no sounds but on here cannot figure it out

Which phone?
Which version of android?
Which carrier?
Which SMS app.

Some apps let you pick the notification type when the app is open vs closed, while some apps do not let you pick.
"Textra" app lets you pick.

When I am getting lots of notifications while actively using the phone, I just put all notifications into vibrate mode via the phone sound settings.
