I know I don't need to upgrade but Swappa has some great prices for the Note 9. Right now you can pick up one for $799 and the seller is giving a 30 money back guarantee.

How does a phone that's been out a week and a half get discounted 20%? Are people just losing $200 trying out a phone for a week? Are they blemished or damaged in any way? Something seems off here.

And the sad thing is they don't see the price as the issue for the slumping sales, they think they're not innovating enough. They're just assuming us sheeple will pay whatever they ask because it says Samsung on it

While it's true that some people will pay anything for a phone if they have "F you" money, they would definitely sell a ton more with a lower price tag. Their profit margin per phone may be higher now. But, overall sales have to be way down from last year.

I bet those Samsung exec's are bummed they can't buy those extra vacation mansions they we're planning on this year lol.

This raises an interesting digression, although an obviously related one on upgrading. When I heard Sammie execs recently pointing to Note users and going in essence "well, these are the people who want the latest and greatest," basically suggesting they'd go along with anything, I have to admit it rubbed me the wrong way. It kinda implied, together with the pricing, that they think they have a target audience that will simply bite no matter what--and therefore they can just jack up the prices as with no blowback. It did start to raise questions in my mind of gouging or exploitation, however you'd like to phrase that.

So, while there are some users that will buy no matter what, there is also a contingency of users that can't justify the paying that much for an iterative upgrade from a Note8 or S9+. Because of this, sales have to be down. The Note8 sales were a one off because of a lack of a Note7. While the Note9 is a great phone, it's not different enough to get more people to bite.
It's like a new car. You don't need a new one every year. If you have a a 2018 model X, you probably don't need a 2019 model X if it just got a refresh. If you're coming from a 2017 or earlier or a lesser model, it's more likely you'll upgrade.

For media fans and folks that line the pen, the N9 is obvious choice over thr 9+ (still have mine as a backup and Gear VR).

Bigger display (The combo of .2" more with less rounded corners and edges make a big difference for content.

Bigger battery

A fraction of the throttling under load for the 845 (Phonearena has test results on the 845). Virtually no performance hit under sustained load. I agree, based on my own use.

Lots more storage

Pen is finally practical, even for media peeps.

That said, if not a media fan, or want the pen, I agree the S9+ is a better overall total cost choice.

The special edition coloured S9 pluses are even more of a bargain with 256gb of storage for the same price.

I can though see 3 reasons to pick the note and the .2" larger screen is not one of them, I'd call out the following:

1- battery
2 - spen but only if you have a genuine use for it.
3- more angular screen and corners.

Imo the YouTube love-in for the note has been a little nauseating.
