So I thought I was crazy yesterday......and then I read this.

I see lot of Apple hate , at least on iOS 12 they have worked to improve performance on older devices. There are a lot of things Apple does bad same way as Google or any other company but I got to give Apple credit for supporting their devices for long. Sure the issue of intentionally slowing down devices for whatever reason was bad from Apple, at least they worked on improving the performance on older devices on latest version. One main reason I love Pixel devices is the platform and security updates from Google and can't be obtained by other OEM.

I don't think Google did anything intentionally here since mistakes happen, and the same way Apple is also not some evil

It's ok to have preference just like every other thing in life, car, clothes and many other things. It's just phones we get personal and start getting on other brands which we are not using.

iPhone are solid devices, they really do make a great product as I own few of them and tablets and will always buy Apple products . They just not best value for your money and not very customizable.

I remember hearing about this story on another Android podcast back in early September. I'm sorry but it's not enough to bother me at all.

Has apple done it?

I am not through the entire thread yet, but I cannot believe Apple's throttling of phones to save battery is much more egregious than what Google did.

I don't even buy Google did it as an accident. I may have been a test to see reaction from the community. Either way, what Google did was immediately reversible by the user -- what Apple did required Apple to undo.

What Google did was bad, what Apple did was worse.

What Apple did, secretly throttling devices for years in order to sell new ones, was dirty, underhanded and egregious. And they had the gall to try to tell folks when they got caught that it was to "protect" their older phones.

Compare that to Android's accidentally turning ON a Battery Saver feature during testing and quickly turning it OFF again and then quickly telling people about the mistaken setting the next day.

Looks like I responded too soon. I cannot believe how deep into the thread I was before somebody brought this up.

And crooked and untrustworthy...... don't forget that ;-)
And I know all companies play dirty to some degree, Apple's just taken it to the next level :O

One thing that really irritates me is Apple didn't include fast charger brick or headphones for the price they charge.

Maybe I wasn't clear, I'm a little upset they can do both and try to do it without anyone knowing or announcing it, or giving me the option to opt in or out of their experiments.

Both Google and Apple can do this, so can Samsung, HTC, every other OEM that licenses their software for you to use on the devices that you purchase from them. Google did not "try to do this without anyone knowing or announcing it", they didn't try to do it at all. That's why it's referred to as a mistake.

Well, this seals it for me. I'm returning my Pixel 3 XL tomorrow. I was just looking for an excuse and this is it.

Why wouldn't be, "i'm looking for an excuse" be a valid reason on its own?

The excuses to justify this is astounding.

Just because the article is a month old is irrelevant.

Disagree on both points. 1) The post you quoted contains no excuses and doesn't appear to justify this mistake. So the excuses, since they don't exist, do not exist to justify anything, and therefore are probably not astounding, any more so than anything else that isn't real. 2) The fact that the article is a month old IS relevant, because this happened prior to anyone ever making a purchase decision on the phone. So everyone had this information available, and bought it anyways. Finally, the OP said, "I thought I was crazy yesterday..." implying that this may have happened to them. It didn't, because it happened over a month prior to the OP even receiving their device and happened to very close to 0% of Pixel 3's that are in the possession of anyone today.

Jeremy8000, I think you make a very good point.

I think a real question that needs to be answered is how did this happen? Ultimately, this was not a terrible thing. But what is to keep someone from accidentally push out something far more consequential?

I have a Pixel2 XL, and I'm not about to get rid of it. But I would be much happier if I knew that Google is looking at this incident and insuring that there won't be a repeat with a more serious feature.

The only thing I'm picking up here is I don't think people read the EULA anymore.

And Apple once mistaken deleted people's photos from iCloud. It's a bigger mistake than this. Point is, everyone makes mistakes.
