So I thought I was crazy yesterday......and then I read this.

Yep post #5 covered that ;).

And then you and SteveISU started discussing going to iPhone as a way to avoid such features. I was only clarifying that isn't an option if this is someone's reason for leaving Android.

#5 still covered it. I never once said it was immune to it because it isn't. No phone is. I was simply stating Play Services can do a lot and tons of users don't seem to realize it... but they like when they get the new Play Store updates automatically the next time they open it :).

Well, this seals it for me. I'm returning my Pixel 3 XL tomorrow. I was just looking for an excuse and this is it.

No, but it seems a lot of people are upset the ability exists in the first place.
I understand why the ability exists, its a matter of excercising it in an ethical manner. Just saying "well apple can to" is a moot point. When they pull this they deserve to be called out for it and people will question being able to trust them.

I thought we all assumed Google, Apple, insert OEM here, would have these abilities. Not that they should act on them, but no shocker.

This is over a month old news. How does anyone not understand the agreements they get enter into is beyond me. all the software on your phone is licensed to you, nothing more and this includes Apple, Microsoft.. whoever. Why anyone would be "surprised" that any software company can alter your device is beyond me.

A misfire during testing is always possible, no matter what company.

Lol, apple can do the same thing if they so desired. I don't doubt for a second the framework and ability isn't there already. If people honestly think apple can't and they offer a private and protected device, You've sorely mistaken. It's the world we live in now.

Has apple done it?

Whether they have or have not is completely irrelevant, If you think they can't you're nuts. Lol this thread is awesome!

Actually whether they have or not is very much relevant. If they did in fact ever do it the circumstances surrounding why they did (thwart some malicious process/app vs casual BS) is also very relevant.

Not really, It would be the same argument. We've had malicious attacks that were patched with emergency software updates, They've been doing it like that for years. Yet I'm sure if Google justified what they did this time because there was a critical bug people would still be screaming conspiracy theories and unacceptable practices, But you know what, Whatever gives you peace of mind and helps you sleep at night is all that matters.

Apple throttled people's devices for years via software and they didn't tell anyone until they got caught. Other than that, no, they never went around and messed around with people's settings without their permission.

The excuses to justify this is astounding.

Just because the article is a month old is irrelevant.

What Apple did, secretly throttling devices for years in order to sell new ones, was dirty, underhanded and egregious. And they had the gall to try to tell folks when they got caught that it was to "protect" their older phones.

Compare that to Android's accidentally turning ON a Battery Saver feature during testing and quickly turning it OFF again and then quickly telling people about the mistaken setting the next day.
