Just wondering if the laser would to stop working would that mean the camera would be useless?

I know the laser works with third party camera apps. I tried a few just to see. Hmm.

Can you actually see the laser? I've not tried...Just curious now to know if it even is working.
You cannot see it with the naked eye. A webcam or any other video camera can pick it up using a filter, though.I believe it's infra-red. But even so I wonder whether it might just be visible in fog.
