Hi, I was wondering if anyone found a way to do a soft reboot on the Evo. I did some searching and found methods for the G1 and Moto Droid but nothing that works on the Evo.

hold the top power button for like 2 seconds and just power it off, then hold it again for a second to power it on
Thats just shutting it down and starting it up. The OP is looking for a way to actually hard reboot the phone.
For example, iPhone can be restarted by holding down the power and home button together.
It's useful to be able to do that if the phone freezes up--less of a hassle in comparison to removing the battery.

the OP is looking for a soft reset....a soft reset is what you just described
I believe you have the terminology mixed up
a hard reboot is wiping all your data and the phone being just like how it was when you first got it
Yes I was looking for an app myself and find it weird there isnt a ton of power related apps already out there like on most platforms. Plenty of battery notifications nothing more
I think the OP is looking for a way to reboot the phone without using the power button to shut down or an app to do it. The power button is used to turn the phone off and on. An app like Quickboot is helpful, but if the phone hangs or freezes up, you can't get to an app. I have had it happen once when I got too ambitious with my live wallpaper settings + doing 25 other things at once while the battery was almost dead (I think the "you need to charge me" popup is what broke the camel's back). The screen went black and the power button wouldn't do anything, so I had to remove the battery and put it back in to get it to reset.
Long story short: I think the OP (and I) would like to see a way to hold down a couple buttons and the phone would restart itself so we could avoid having to remove the battery to accomplish a reboot.

A hard reboot is when the power is removed from the system, like pulling the battery. It does not wipe your phone.
A soft reboot is a reboot that is under software control, such as the power button on the phone.

Well, after a few years and thousands of posts at PPC Geeks ... guess it's time to jump into Android Central. Looks like we're all using different semantics. Coming from Windows Mobile, which many of us are ... a soft reset is simply rebooting the system, which could be done several different ways. A hard reset did in fact wipe your data and return the system to it's original state. Learning curves are always fun ...

I was just using the general PC definition, and Wikipedia
I wasn't being critical ... simply trying to help some of us android noob's who are in transition.
This is covered in the first hour of the first day of A+ class guys.
Hard Reboot - Removing power source from the system aka holding down the power button on a computer, or yanking the plug out. Or yanking the battery out on a phone
Soft Reboot - Letting the software appropriately shut the device down. Aka Going to Start > Shutdown on a windows machine, or pressing the power button and choosing "turn off" on the Evo.
a Hard RESET would be clearing all factory settings, but that isnt related to a reboot

ah ok..it was the same way with the Palm Treo's....I guess I have to get used to new terminology
so a hard reset on a WM phone equivalent to what in android? a hard wipe? thanks

If all you want to do is reboot or shutoff the phone using software instead of the power button.. there's an app in the Market called Quickboot. I've been using it to reboot my phone. Easier than power button (even has widgets for the home screens).
i tried it, but it says i need to root my device
also, all the reviews says it doesn't work with a rooted evo

Yes, I'm looking for software to reboot. I'm having a problem where if I use the button to turn the phone off it doesn't turn back on when I press the button again. I think the phone is actually turning the screen off but crashing before it shuts down because when I plug the charger in to it, the light doesn't come on like it does when it's "off".
I wanted to test to see if a "reboot" command issued by the software not a "shut down" command change the way this worked.
