My phone has been bricked since the update on Wed. Finally had time to visit my local Device Support Center earlier today. They did not have an OS backup on site and scheduled a replacement phone to be sent in a few days. They also mentioned someone fixed their own phone using a laptop while waiting for them to finish the paperwork earlier in the week. I figured that was as close to an official endorsement for DIY as I was going to get!
