Software update is rolling out

Just wanted to confirm that I got the OTA with no issues.

1a) This requires root and unlocked bootloader.
1b) Made nandroid of 4.1.2 pre-OTA firmware using CWM-based custom recovery.
2) Ran Razr MAXX utility, used options 1 to restore stock ROM and option 2 to restore stock recovery. (MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE YOUR BATTERY IS 100%. YOU WILL LOSE ROOT AND THIS WILL WIPE YOUR INTERNAL MEMORY.
3) Used utility option 3? to reroot stock with the motochopper exploit.
4) Backed up root with Voodoo.
5) Took OTA through Settings > About Phone > Software Update. Phone will reboot and install the update.
6) Restored root with Voodoo.
7) Restored custom recovery with Razr MAXX utility. (option 7 -- CWM-based for me, options 5 and 6 work as well)
8) Froze bloatware with Titanium Backup.

Still unlocked and still rooted, no problems.

Keep in mind that custom recoveries require your bootloader to be unlocked.

EDIT: The new update seems to have made the phone a little smoother, and I get a stronger 3G connection (less data drops). 4G seems to be unaffected. Verizon made an official post regarding the changelog and everything they mentioned there seems to be the case.

Questions? How did you make the nandroid, and was it of the last 4. 1. 2, or the stock from option 1. Thanks

I had the bootloader unlocked and installed the CWM-based custom recovery. Made a nandroid of latest 4.1.2. with that. I then reverted to stock ROM/recovery with the utility, rerooted with utility, backed up with Voodoo, then took the OTA manually through system settings.

BE WARNED the utility WILL wipe your internal SD card. CWM stores nandroid backups on internal memory so back them up before flashing back to stock. I lost some data due to this because of my own stupidity in forgetting where my pictures were stored.

@raikalo, Thank you for the detailed instruction...I gave up trying to get this OTA. went to XDA and installed the latest CM10.1. A few minor issue but other wise, pretty stable ROM. I have the 4.2.1 backup so can revert and use your instructions "if" needed.

The only change with the update I've noticed is SMS unread count is mostly right. A few times I notice an incorrect 1 but that is only when sending a MMS. That whole data meter thing, yeah that was already like that before the update. They mean the data usage separating WIFI and Mobile Data, right? I've always had that. My phone never had reboot issues. Which ironically turned into my phone developing a lag, which was solved by rebooting it manually every 2 days.

Manual reboots are usually good for any device, once in a while. Developing lag based on an anti-lag update is pretty funny though.

Do you have delivery reports turned on? When you send an MMS, the delivery report creates a "1" on the unread message counter.

I received the 9.18.79 build on my RAZR Maxx HD,i am bone stock. Will i be able to root now??

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you use the utility listed earlier, possibly donate if possible, you should be able to. You will have to start from scratch.

Tech head, I've tried using voodoo to keep root, it says it's backed up a copy of root, I try downloading the update, then go forward with installing, the phone reboots, the android guy pops up and it does it thing for three seconds and then says it failed, and the phone reboots back again but normal way of rebooting.

I learned from my Razr Maxx to not remove the bloatware, and have just froze everything on this maxx hd, but the phone is doing just like my Razr Maxx would do with the bloat removed.

I don't know how in the world you guys that claim voodoo root keeper worked for you, I've never had any luck at it, maybe I'm doing something wrong, who knows.

Razr Maxx HD

You need to make sure the latest version of su is installed.
I typically will do the following:
Launch Superuser and check to see if su is out of date. If it is, update it.
Launch busybox installer and get the latest version of busybox.
Launch Voodoo and "Delete su backup", then protect root all over again.
Then I "Temp un-root" and restore root .

This makes sure *ALL* copies of su are consistent.
I have been through upgrades on the following phones and have never lost root:
Razr, Razr Maxx, Droid Bionic, Razr HD.
Most of these through multiple upgrades.

It works and reliably. As far as taking the update with frozen bloat.
I use the mechanism in ICS and now JB to "disable" any apps I don't want to use.
There are a few that require using Titanium Backup or something else. Only the few that the OS won't disable do I freeze using TB.
To date I have not had any issues taking an update on the BIonic my wife has or the Razr HD, I still have.
