Hi all - need help.

Upgraded my wife's s10e to the s24. Big change and she's real happy.

Everything went flawlessly but now when we're looking at Google maps on her device for location sharing, it says at the very top like included in this screenshot, it needs extra permissions.

20240708_172139.jpgI don't know what it's asking for. All possible permissions are enabled. I tried clicking the allow on the right side, but nothing happens. I can't dismiss it. It acts like it's not there.

Help please.

If you long-press the Maps app on your home screen or app drawer and select INFO, go to Permissions, is the Location permission set to 'Allowed all the time'? Is the 'Physical activity' permission set to that, as well?

Yes to both.
Can't figure this out... Argh.

Have you tried to uninstall/re-install the Google Maps app? This should prompt any missing permissions to be asked for, well, permission. That may be easier than trying to figure this out :(

Instead of uninstalling and reinstalling Google Maps. Clear the app data. This resets the app to as if it was a fresh install. From there, it should ask you for permissions again.
This did it!! Thank you!

Even though I tried manually enabling all permissions it still didn't reset everything needed.

In case anyone is curious, my wife HATES notifications from apps (🙄 I know). Bc those were off, that message was displayed. Once the app data was cleared and all started fresh again - notifications were allowed and that message disappeared.

Thanks so much @Village_Idiot and everyone for chiming in!!

Glad you got it working! (But now it's gonna leave me wondering why uninstalling an app didn't clear its data... damn it! haha)

App settings and other persistent app related files (like temp files) are not necessarily stored in the same location as the app. Because of this, some apps only uninstall the application itself, but leaves the settings alone. Where as, clearing data clears the app data (which includes any temp files and settings) and leaves the application itself alone.

I would bet a dozen Leonard's malasadas that Google apps store settings and file caches separately in common location on the device (kinda like how Microsoft does). That would make it easier for Google app developers to write code. Instead of having to code each app separately for common system files or settings, all they would need to do is point to where the Google apps keep their settings.

It streamlines coding and it can also streamline backing up settings for its apps. Remember, even though Android is open source, it is still owned by Google.

While everything you say is correct...it doesn't relieve the app developers from doing a better job at making sure ALL files are removed completely when uninstalling an app. I have had certain apps (can't remember which ones) that would actually ask me during an uninstall if I wanted certain files to remain or be removed also. I like that option!

For independent app developers that would be a true statement. But for developers that work for Google, that is not an option of they are told this is how they will code.

I have also had apps ask me if I want to delete my app settings. Those apps were written by developers who a) know what they are doing, or b) the company they work for knows what it is doing.
